A wind turbine profit calculator estimates how much money a turbine makes after it's built. You enter the turbine's rated power, your site's capacity factor, the value of each kilowatt-hour, and your yearly costs. The tool returns annual profit, payback period, and lifetime return. For a farmer pricing a small turbine or a developer screening a site, those numbers decide whether the project is worth building.

Wind supplies about 10 percent of US electricity and releases no carbon dioxide while it runs. Whether a turbine makes money depends on wind, price, and cost, and a small shift in any of them can change payback by a decade. This guide explains how a wind turbine profit calculator works, walks through four real scenarios, and covers the mistakes that turn good-looking projects into losses.

What Is a Wind Turbine Profit Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A wind turbine profit calculator turns a turbine's energy output into dollars. It multiplies annual kilowatt-hours by the price you earn or save per kWh, then subtracts operating costs and compares the result with the installed cost. In plain English, it asks how long the turbine takes to pay for itself.

Farmers, ranchers, small businesses, and wind developers use it to compare turbines and sites. A wrong answer is expensive. Overestimating capacity factor by 5 points on a $65,000 small turbine can hide a payback that stretches from 23 years to over 30.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these numbers first. Quotes and utility bills hold most of them.

The turbine's rated power in kilowatts, from the manufacturer's spec sheet.
Your site's expected capacity factor, taken from a wind resource assessment or the manufacturer's power curve.
The net installed cost, including the tower, foundation, inverter, wiring, and permits, minus any grants.
The price per kWh you earn or avoid, whether a retail rate, a net metering credit, or a power purchase agreement price.
Your annual operating costs, including maintenance, insurance, land lease, and property tax.
Any major replacement costs, such as an inverter or gearbox, spread across the turbine's life.
The expected lifetime of the turbine, usually 20 to 25 years.

How to Use This Wind Turbine Profit Calculator — Step by Step

Follow these steps in order, and use annual figures throughout.

Enter the rated power in kilowatts from your quote.
Enter your capacity factor as a percentage, using measured data if you have it.
Enter the price you earn per kWh, using your net metering credit if you export power.
Add all yearly costs into one annual figure, including a reserve for big repairs.
Enter the net installed cost after grants.
Enter the turbine lifetime in years.
Calculate, then record annual profit, payback, and lifetime return.

The Wind Turbine Profit Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

The idea is simple. A turbine produces a predictable amount of energy per year, and each kilowatt-hour has a dollar value. Subtract what it costs to keep the turbine running, and what's left pays back the purchase price.

The formulas are:

Net Annual Profit = (Rated kW × 8,760 × Capacity Factor × Price per kWh) − Annual Costs

Simple Payback (years) = Net Installed Cost ÷ Net Annual Profit

Lifetime Return (%) = ((Net Annual Profit × Lifetime Years) − Net Installed Cost) ÷ Net Installed Cost × 100

Rated kW: the turbine's maximum output. Range runs from 1 kW for micro turbines to 5,000 kW for large land-based machines.
8,760: the number of hours in a year.
Capacity Factor: the share of rated output the turbine delivers over a year, as a decimal. Small turbines run 0.10 to 0.30. Utility-scale turbines run 0.25 to 0.50.
Price per kWh: the value of each unit of energy, in dollars. Range runs from $0.04 for wholesale power to $0.40 in high-cost markets.
Annual Costs: yearly operating expenses in dollars. Small turbines typically spend 1 to 2 percent of installed cost, and utility-scale projects spend about $40 to $50 per kW.
Net Installed Cost: total project cost after grants. Range runs from $4,000 to $8,000 per kW for small wind, and $1,300 to $1,700 per kW for utility scale.
Lifetime Years: expected operating life, usually 20 to 25.

The formula works because capacity factor converts a turbine's rating into real energy, and price converts energy into money. Dividing cost by yearly profit then shows how quickly the money comes back. Simple payback and lifetime return are standard tools described in engineering economy texts such as Blank and Tarquin's Engineering Economy, and the capacity factor method matches NREL's Cost of Wind Energy Review. The combined profit equation is a widely accepted industry formula.

Wind Turbine Profit Calculator — Worked Examples

All examples exclude tax credits, since federal incentives for wind have changed recently. Verify what's available before you rely on any savings.

Beginner: 10 kW Turbine on an Iowa Farm

A farmer in Iowa is pricing a 10 kW turbine at $65,000 installed. His site supports a 25 percent capacity factor. He pays $0.16 per kWh and expects $700 a year for maintenance and insurance. The turbine should last 20 years.

Find annual energy: 10 × 8,760 × 0.25 = 21,900 kWh.
Find annual value: 21,900 × $0.16 = $3,504.
Subtract costs: $3,504 − $700 = $2,804 net profit.
Find payback: $65,000 ÷ $2,804 = 23.2 years.
Find lifetime earnings: $2,804 × 20 = $56,080.
Find lifetime return: ($56,080 − $65,000) ÷ $65,000 = −13.7 percent.

The turbine doesn't pay for itself within its life. He should look for a windier spot, a lower price, or a grant before signing anything.

Professional: 2.5 MW Turbine in West Texas

A developer evaluates a 2.5 MW turbine installed at $1,500 per kW. The site supports a 38 percent capacity factor. A power purchase agreement, including renewable energy credits, pays $0.055 per kWh. Yearly costs are $110,000 for operations, $12,000 for land lease, and $13,000 for insurance and tax. Life is 25 years.

Find installed cost: 2,500 × $1,500 = $3,750,000.
Find annual energy: 2,500 × 8,760 × 0.38 = 8,322,000 kWh.
Find annual revenue: 8,322,000 × $0.055 = $457,710.
Add costs: $110,000 + $12,000 + $13,000 = $135,000.
Find net profit: $457,710 − $135,000 = $322,710.
Find payback: $3,750,000 ÷ $322,710 = 11.6 years.
Find lifetime earnings: $322,710 × 25 = $8,067,750.
Find lifetime return: ($8,067,750 − $3,750,000) ÷ $3,750,000 = 115 percent.
Find avoided carbon: 8,322,000 × 0.37 kg = 3,079 metric tons per year.

The project clears its cost with room to spare, but this simple model ignores financing and the time value of money. The developer should run a full discounted cash flow before committing capital.

Edge Case: 5 kW Turbine With a Grant and a Weak Site

A rancher in Wyoming has a 5 kW turbine quote of $40,000. A rural energy grant would cover 25 percent. The site supports only an 18 percent capacity factor. Electricity costs $0.11 per kWh. Maintenance runs $500 a year, and she reserves $4,000 for an inverter replacement spread over 20 years.

Find net cost: $40,000 × 0.75 = $30,000.
Find annual energy: 5 × 8,760 × 0.18 = 7,884 kWh.
Find annual value: 7,884 × $0.11 = $867.24.
Find costs: 500+(4,000 ÷ 20) = $700.
Find net profit: $867.24 − $700 = $167.24.
Find payback: $30,000 ÷ $167.24 = 179 years.
Find the break-even price for a 20-year payback: ($30,000 ÷ 20 + $700) ÷ 7,884 = $0.279 per kWh.

The calculator's best service here is saying no. Electricity would have to cost nearly 28 cents per kWh to justify the turbine. She should consider solar, or look for a site with stronger wind.

Regional Variant: 20 kW Turbine in Hawaii With a Specific Yield Quote

A business owner in Maui receives a quote from a supplier who lists output as specific yield, 2,628 kWh per kW per year. The 20 kW turbine costs $120,000 installed. Local electricity costs $0.40 per kWh, and yearly costs are $1,500. Life is 20 years.

Convert to capacity factor: 2,628 ÷ 8,760 = 0.30.
Find annual energy: 20 × 2,628 = 52,560 kWh.
Find annual value: 52,560 × $0.40 = $21,024.
Find net profit: $21,024 − $1,500 = $19,524.
Find payback: $120,000 ÷ $19,524 = 6.1 years.
Find lifetime earnings: $19,524 × 20 = $390,480.
Find lifetime return: ($390,480 − $120,000) ÷ $120,000 = 225 percent.

High island electricity prices make the same technology far more attractive than in Iowa. Hawaii's utility programs have changed over the years, so he should confirm what export credit he'll actually earn.

Wind Turbine Profit Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

Your result falls on a clear scale. A payback under 8 years is excellent, and it usually appears in high-price markets or at windy utility-scale sites. A payback from 8 to 15 years is acceptable for most owners. From 15 to 25 years, the project is marginal, and small changes in price or cost can erase the gain. Anything longer than the turbine's life means you lose money.

A low payback number deserves a second look at your capacity factor, since optimistic wind data is the usual cause. A long payback isn't always final. Cutting installed cost, adding a grant, or moving to a windier spot can bring it into range, as the Iowa and Hawaii examples show.

The most common misunderstanding is treating revenue as profit. Maintenance, insurance, and major repairs take a real share, and small turbines often lose 20 to 25 percent of revenue to them. A second trap is trusting payback alone. Simple payback ignores the time value of money, financing costs, and the fact that your own electricity prices may rise or fall.

If your payback lands near the turbine's lifespan, test it against a pessimistic case with a capacity factor 5 points lower. If it still works, the project is sturdy. If it doesn't, keep looking.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Capacity factor moves payback more than any other input, and the relationship isn't linear. Using the Iowa farm ($65,000 cost, $0.16 per kWh, $700 costs, 10 kW), here's how it shifts.

Capacity Factor	Annual Energy (kWh)	Net Profit	Payback (years)
15%	13,140	$1,402	46.3
20%	17,520	$2,103	30.9
25%	21,900	$2,804	23.2
30%	26,280	$3,505	18.5
35%	30,660	$4,206	15.5

Going from 15 to 35 percent cuts payback by 31 years. Fixed costs take a big bite at low output, which makes weak sites worse than they look.

Electricity price has just as much leverage. At a 25 percent capacity factor, the same turbine behaves very differently across markets.

Price per kWh	Net Profit	Payback (years)
$0.10	$1,490	43.6
$0.12	$1,928	33.7
$0.16	$2,804	23.2
$0.20	$3,680	17.7
$0.30	$5,870	11.1

This is why wind pays off in Hawaii and struggles in low-cost states. Note that exported power often earns far less than the retail rate you avoid by using it.

Installed cost works directly on the numerator. At $2,804 of yearly profit, a $40,000 installation pays back in 14.3 years, $50,000 in 17.8 years, $65,000 in 23.2 years, and $80,000 in 28.5 years. A $15,000 saving on the foundation or tower can matter more than a better turbine.

Operating costs deserve more attention than they get. Dropping annual costs from $700 to $400 improves payback from 23.2 to 20.9 years. Raising them to $1,200 pushes it to 28.2 years, and $2,000 stretches it to 43.2. A turbine with a poor service record can destroy an otherwise good projection.

Wind Turbine Profit Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Treating rated power as actual output. A 10 kW turbine rarely produces 10 kW all day. Use capacity factor, or you'll overstate energy by three to five times.
Confusing average wind speed with capacity factor. A 12 mph average doesn't tell you the output. Use the manufacturer's power curve and a full wind speed distribution.
Forgetting repair and replacement costs. Inverters, blades, and gearboxes wear out. Reserve 1 to 2 percent of installed cost each year for small turbines.
Valuing every kWh at the retail rate. Net metering may credit exported power at far less than the price you pay. Check your utility's current export terms.
Counting tax credits that no longer exist. Federal wind incentives have changed by recent legislation, and many state programs have expired. Confirm every incentive before it enters your math.
Mixing units. Costs per kW, per MW, and per watt differ by factors of 1,000. Specific yield in kWh per kW also differs from capacity factor, so convert one before using the other.
Using the calculator where it doesn't fit. It doesn't capture financing, taxes, depreciation, or rising electricity rates, and it shouldn't replace a full financial model for large projects or sites facing zoning limits.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies a three-part model. Annual energy equals rated power times 8,760 hours times capacity factor, a method consistent with NREL's Cost of Wind Energy Review. Annual profit equals energy times price minus yearly costs. Payback and lifetime return follow the simple payback and return calculations in Blank and Tarquin's Engineering Economy.

The tool assumes constant electricity prices, constant costs, and no output decline. It uses a fixed capacity factor that you enter, and it treats major repairs as an annual reserve.

It excludes financing, taxes, depreciation, tax credits, discounting, rate escalation, and curtailment. Those need a full cash flow model. Dollar figures round to the nearest whole dollar, payback rounds to one decimal place, and lifetime return rounds to the nearest tenth of a percent.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wind Turbine Profit Calculator

1. What does a wind turbine profit calculator actually calculate?

It calculates how much money a turbine earns after costs and how long it takes to repay its installed price. It converts annual energy into dollars, subtracts operating expenses, and divides the net cost by yearly profit. You also get lifetime return, which shows whether the project makes money over the turbine's life.

2. How accurate is a wind turbine profit calculator?

Accuracy depends mostly on your capacity factor and electricity price. With measured wind data and a firm price, results fall within about 10 to 15 percent. With guessed inputs, errors reach 50 percent or more. Because payback changes sharply with output, test a low-wind case before you decide.

3. What is the formula for wind turbine profit in simple terms?

Multiply rated power by 8,760 hours and your capacity factor to get annual kilowatt-hours. Multiply that by your price per kWh, then subtract yearly costs. The result is annual profit. Divide the installed cost by that profit to find payback. Each step answers one question: how much energy, what it's worth, and what's left.

4. Why do wind turbine profits differ so much between states?

Profit differs by state because wind resources, electricity prices, net metering rules, and permitting vary widely. A turbine in Hawaii, where power costs about $0.40 per kWh, can pay back in six years. The same turbine in a low-cost state with weak wind may never pay back. Always use your own local numbers.

5. When doesn't a wind turbine profit calculator work?

It doesn't work well for sites with turbulent or unmeasured wind, such as cities or wooded lots. It also falls short for large projects that need financing, tax, and discounting analysis. If your payback comes out longer than the turbine's life, the calculator is telling you the project doesn't work as planned.

6. How can I get a more precise wind turbine profit estimate?

Measure wind at hub height for at least 12 months, and use the manufacturer's certified power curve instead of a general capacity factor. Get firm installation quotes and written utility export terms. Add a realistic reserve for repairs. Then run your numbers three ways: low, expected, and high wind.

7. How much profit does a typical wind turbine make per year?

A typical 10 kW turbine at a good site saves about $2,000 to $3,500 a year after costs. A 2.5 MW utility-scale turbine at a 38 percent capacity factor nets roughly $200,000 to $330,000 depending on price. Profits vary widely with wind, electricity rates, and operating costs, so use your own inputs.

8. Do I need a financial advisor or engineer before buying a wind turbine?

You should consult both. An engineer verifies your wind resource, tower height, and electrical connection. A financial advisor checks financing, taxes, and the realistic value of incentives. A local attorney can confirm zoning and interconnection rules. Professional review costs little compared with a $65,000 turbine that never pays back.
