Cutting a birdsmouth notch by eye is one of the fastest ways to weaken a roof structure without realizing it until years later. This small triangular notch is where the rafter transfers the entire roof load down into the wall's top plate, and if the notch is cut too deep or at the wrong angle, that connection point becomes the weakest link in the whole frame. A slightly undersized seat cut leaves the rafter rocking on the plate instead of sitting flush.

A birdsmouth cut calculator takes your roof pitch and rafter dimensions and works out the exact seat cut length and heel cut depth needed for a solid, code-compliant notch. Whether you're framing a shed roof, a garage addition, or a full residential roof system, getting these two numbers right the first time means every rafter sits flush on the plate and the notch stays within safe structural limits.

What Is a Birdsmouth Cut Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A birdsmouth cut calculator determines the seat cut length and heel cut depth needed to notch a rafter so it sits flush and level on a wall's top plate at the correct roof angle. The core method uses the roof pitch to find the rafter angle, then applies basic trigonometry to size the notch so the heel depth stays within safe structural limits. Framers, roofers, and DIY builders all rely on this calculation before making a single cut, since one accurate rafter becomes the pattern for every other rafter on the roof. Getting it wrong means a notch cut too deep, weakening the rafter at its most load-bearing point, or too shallow, leaving the rafter unstable on the plate.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these details before calculating your birdsmouth cut, since rafter notching depends on precise pitch and lumber dimensions.

Your roof pitch, expressed as rise over a 12-inch run, such as 6/12 or 8/12.
The nominal depth of your rafter stock, typically 2x6, 2x8, or 2x10 lumber.
The width of your wall's top plate, usually 3.5 inches for a single 2x4 plate or 5.5 inches for a 2x6 plate.
Whether you're using a single or double top plate, since a double plate adds another 1.5 inches to the seat cut length.
The species and grade of your rafter lumber, since some engineered or lower-grade lumber has stricter notching limits.
Whether the rafter has a tail extending past the wall for an overhang, since this affects where the birdsmouth sits along the rafter's length.

How to Use This Birdsmouth Cut Calculator — Step by Step

Follow these steps to turn your roof pitch and lumber dimensions into an accurate notch layout.

Enter your roof pitch as a rise-over-run ratio, such as 6 inches of rise per 12 inches of run.
Enter your rafter's nominal depth, since this sets the maximum allowable heel cut before the notch weakens the member.
Enter your top plate width, accounting for a single or double plate configuration.
Let the calculator convert your pitch into a roof angle using the arctangent of rise over run.
Review the calculated seat cut length, which should sit flush across the full plate width.
Review the calculated heel cut depth and confirm it falls within the safe fraction of your rafter's total depth.
Mark and cut one rafter first as a pattern, test-fit it on the wall, and confirm level before cutting the rest of the batch.

The Birdsmouth Cut Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

A birdsmouth notch is really two cuts meeting at a corner: a level seat cut that rests on the plate and a plumb heel cut that rises to meet the rafter's top edge. This works because the seat cut has to sit dead level regardless of roof pitch, while the heel cut has to follow the roof angle so the rafter's sloped underside clears the plate correctly. This calculation follows standard roof framing geometry referenced in the International Residential Code, Section R802.7, which governs allowable notching and cutting of structural rafters.

Roof Angle = ARCTAN(Rise ÷ Run) Seat Cut Length = Plate Width Heel Cut Depth = Seat Cut Length × TAN(Roof Angle) Maximum Allowable Heel Depth = Rafter Depth ÷ 3

Rise: the vertical rise of the roof per 12 inches of horizontal run, in inches, typically 4 to 12 for common residential pitches.
Run: the fixed horizontal distance used to express pitch, standardized at 12 inches.
Roof Angle: the resulting slope angle in degrees, typically 18 to 45 degrees for residential roofs.
Plate Width: the horizontal width of the top plate, in inches, typically 3.5 inches for a single 2x4 plate.
Heel Cut Depth: the vertical depth of the plumb cut, in inches, measured from the rafter's bottom edge.
Rafter Depth: the full nominal depth of the rafter stock, in inches, typically 5.5 to 9.25 inches for 2x6 through 2x10 lumber.

The formula works because the seat cut's fixed horizontal length, combined with the roof's angle, geometrically determines exactly how deep the heel cut needs to be to meet the rafter's sloped underside. Checking that result against one-third of the rafter's total depth is what keeps the notch from cutting through so much wood that the rafter loses its load-bearing strength at the bearing point.

Birdsmouth Cut Calculator — Worked Examples

Beginner Scenario: Simple Shed Roof with a 4/12 Pitch

A DIY builder is framing a shed roof at a 4/12 pitch using 2x6 rafters on a wall with a single 2x4 top plate. The rafter depth is 5.5 inches, and the plate width is 3.5 inches.

Roof angle: ARCTAN(4 ÷ 12) = ARCTAN(0.333) = 18.4 degrees.
Seat cut length: matches plate width of 3.5 inches.
Heel cut depth: 3.5 × TAN(18.4°) = 3.5 × 0.333 = 1.17 inches.
Maximum allowable heel depth: 5.5 ÷ 3 = 1.83 inches.

Since the calculated heel depth of 1.17 inches falls comfortably under the 1.83-inch maximum, this notch is safe to cut on standard 2x6 rafters. The builder can mark the seat cut at 3.5 inches and the heel cut at 1.17 inches with confidence that the rafter retains most of its structural depth above the notch.

Professional Scenario: Contractor Framing a Steep 10/12 Roof with a Double Top Plate

A contractor is framing a residential roof at a steep 10/12 pitch using 2x8 rafters on a wall with a double 2x4 top plate, adding up to a combined plate width of 5 inches. The rafter depth is 7.25 inches.

Roof angle: ARCTAN(10 ÷ 12) = ARCTAN(0.833) = 39.8 degrees.
Seat cut length: matches combined plate width of 5 inches.
Heel cut depth: 5 × TAN(39.8°) = 5 × 0.833 = 4.17 inches.
Maximum allowable heel depth: 7.25 ÷ 3 = 2.42 inches.

This result flags a real problem: the calculated heel depth of 4.17 inches far exceeds the 2.42-inch safe maximum for a 2x8 rafter. On steep pitches with wide plates, the contractor needs to either upsize to a deeper rafter like a 2x10, reduce the seat cut length using a shortened bearing detail, or use an engineered ledger or hanger connection instead of a deep birdsmouth notch.

Edge Case: Low-Slope 2/12 Roof Requiring a Minimum Bearing Check

A builder is framing a low-slope porch roof at a 2/12 pitch using 2x6 rafters on a standard single 2x4 plate. Because the pitch is so shallow, the concern shifts from excessive heel depth to insufficient bearing length on the plate.

Roof angle: ARCTAN(2 ÷ 12) = ARCTAN(0.167) = 9.5 degrees.
Seat cut length: matches plate width of 3.5 inches.
Heel cut depth: 3.5 × TAN(9.5°) = 3.5 × 0.167 = 0.58 inches.
Maximum allowable heel depth: 5.5 ÷ 3 = 1.83 inches.

The heel depth here is well within safe limits, but the shallow angle means the notch is barely noticeable, and the builder should double check that the seat cut still provides full, flat bearing across the entire plate width rather than a knife-edge contact. Low-slope roofs rarely have a heel-depth problem, but they're worth a visual check to confirm the seat cut sits fully flat rather than pivoting on one edge.

Regional Variant: Metric Roof Pitch for an Imported Timber Frame Design

A builder working from European architectural plans has a roof pitch specified as a 35-degree angle directly, rather than a rise-over-run ratio, using timber rafters with a 200-millimeter depth on a 140-millimeter-wide plate.

Roof angle: given directly as 35 degrees, no conversion from rise and run needed.
Seat cut length: matches plate width of 140 millimeters.
Heel cut depth: 140 × TAN(35°) = 140 × 0.700 = 98 millimeters.
Maximum allowable heel depth: 200 ÷ 3 = 66.7 millimeters.

This result shows the calculated 98-millimeter heel depth exceeds the 66.7-millimeter safe maximum, similar to the steep-pitch American example. Builders working from European plans should convert both plate width and rafter depth to a single consistent unit before running the calculation, and when the heel depth fails the check, the same solutions apply: a deeper rafter, a shortened seat cut, or an engineered bearing connection.

Birdsmouth Cut Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

Your result tells you two things: the exact cut dimensions to mark on your rafter, and whether that notch is structurally safe. A low heel depth relative to rafter size, well under the one-third maximum, means you have a clean, safe notch with plenty of remaining rafter depth above the cut. A heel depth that meets or exceeds the one-third maximum is a warning sign, not just a number to round and move past.

Most standard residential roofs between 4/12 and 8/12 pitch, framed with common plate widths, produce a safe heel depth without any adjustment needed. The most common misunderstanding is treating the calculated heel depth as automatically safe just because the calculator produced a number. Steeper pitches, wider plates, or shallower rafter stock can easily push the calculated heel depth past the safe fraction, and that result means the design needs to change, not that the notch should be cut anyway.

If your result fails the maximum heel depth check, don't just cut a shallower notch that doesn't match the roof angle, since that leaves the rafter resting on a corner rather than sitting flush. Instead, increase your rafter depth, look at engineered hardware like rafter hangers or seismic ties, or consult a structural engineer for roofs where the standard birdsmouth geometry doesn't fit safely within your framing dimensions.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Roof pitch has the most dramatic effect on heel depth of any input, since it's inside the tangent function that drives the whole calculation. Moving from a 4/12 pitch to an 8/12 pitch on the same 3.5-inch plate width roughly doubles the heel cut depth, from about 1.17 inches to about 2.75 inches, even though the plate width never changed.

Plate width scales heel depth in direct proportion, since it's a straight multiplier in the formula. Switching from a single 3.5-inch plate to a double plate at 5.5 inches increases heel depth by nearly 60 percent at any given pitch, which is why double top plates on steep roofs often push a design past the safe notching limit.

Rafter depth doesn't affect the heel cut calculation itself, but it directly controls the maximum allowable depth the notch can safely reach. Moving from 2x6 to 2x8 rafters increases the safe maximum from 1.83 inches to 2.42 inches, often enough to bring a borderline design back within safe limits without changing the roof pitch at all.

Roof Pitch | Roof Angle (deg) | Heel Depth (3.5in plate) | Safe on 2x6 (max 1.83in)? 4/12 | 18.4 | 1.17 in | Yes 6/12 | 26.6 | 1.75 in | Yes, barely 8/12 | 33.7 | 2.33 in | No 10/12 | 39.8 | 2.92 in | No

The table above shows a clear tipping point around 6/12 to 8/12 pitch on standard 2x6 rafters with a single plate, which is exactly why steeper residential roofs commonly move up to 2x8 or larger rafter stock.

Birdsmouth Cut Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Cutting the heel depth deeper than one-third of the rafter's total depth, which significantly weakens the rafter at its highest-stress bearing point.
Confusing nominal and actual lumber dimensions, since a 2x8 rafter actually measures 7.25 inches deep, not a full 8 inches.
Marking the seat cut shorter than the actual plate width, leaving the rafter resting on a narrow edge instead of full flat bearing.
Forgetting to account for a double top plate, which adds a full 1.5 inches to the seat cut length compared to a single plate.
Cutting a birdsmouth on a steep-pitch roof without checking the heel depth against the maximum, assuming the calculator's raw output is automatically code-compliant.
Mixing up rise-over-run pitch notation with a direct angle measurement when working from imported or engineered plans specified in degrees.
Using a single test rafter's fit as proof of safety without also checking the heel depth calculation, since a notch can look fine visually while still exceeding safe structural limits.
Applying the same birdsmouth dimensions across rafters of different actual depths, especially when mixing old and new lumber stock on a repair or addition project.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies standard rafter framing geometry, using roof pitch to calculate the roof angle and then sizing the birdsmouth notch so the seat cut matches the plate width and the heel cut follows the resulting slope. The maximum allowable heel depth check reflects the notching limitations described in the International Residential Code, Section R802.7, which restricts how much of a structural member's depth can be removed at bearing points.

The calculator assumes standard dimensional lumber with typical actual dimensions for nominal sizing, and it doesn't automatically adjust for engineered lumber like I-joists or LVL rafters, which often prohibit birdsmouth notching entirely. It also doesn't account for species-specific allowable stress values, which can tighten safe notching limits further on lower-grade lumber. Results are rounded to the nearest hundredth of an inch for layout precision on a speed square or framing square.

Frequently Asked Questions About Birdsmouth Cut Calculator

What does a birdsmouth cut calculator actually calculate?

It calculates the seat cut length and heel cut depth needed to notch a rafter so it sits flush and level on a wall's top plate at the correct roof angle. It also checks whether that heel depth stays within safe structural limits for the rafter size used.

How accurate is a birdsmouth cut calculator's result?

It's mathematically exact once you enter the correct roof pitch, plate width, and rafter depth, since the underlying trigonometry has no estimation involved. Field accuracy depends on using actual, not nominal, lumber dimensions and confirming your plate configuration matches what's entered.

What is the birdsmouth cut formula in simple terms?

Find the roof angle from your pitch, set the seat cut length equal to your plate width, then multiply that length by the tangent of the roof angle to get heel cut depth. Compare that heel depth against one-third of your rafter's actual depth to confirm it's safe.

Do birdsmouth cut dimensions differ between US and metric framing?

Yes, US framing typically expresses pitch as rise over a 12-inch run, while European and metric framing often specifies roof angle directly in degrees. Converting rafter depth and plate width to one consistent unit before calculating avoids errors in the final notch dimensions.

When does a birdsmouth cut calculator not give a usable result?

It flags an unsafe design when the calculated heel depth exceeds the safe maximum, which happens often on steep pitches combined with wide plates or shallow rafters. In these cases, the fix is a design change, not cutting the notch anyway, since the calculator is correctly identifying a structural problem.

How can I get a more precise birdsmouth cut?

Always measure your actual lumber dimensions rather than relying on nominal sizes, and confirm your exact plate configuration, including whether it's single or double, before calculating. Cut and test-fit one pattern rafter before batch-cutting the rest.

What's a typical heel cut depth for a residential roof?

Most common residential pitches between 4/12 and 6/12, framed on standard 2x6 or larger rafters with a single top plate, produce heel cuts between 1 and 2 inches. Steeper pitches or wider plates often push that figure higher and require deeper rafter stock.

Should a professional check my birdsmouth cut calculations?

For a simple, standard-pitch roof using common rafter and plate sizes, careful use of this calculator is often sufficient for a safe DIY cut. For steep pitches, engineered lumber, or any result that fails the maximum heel depth check, a structural engineer or experienced framer should review the design before cutting.
