Cutting through a load-bearing wall for a new doorway looks simple until you realize the wall above that opening was doing structural work you now have to replace. A header carries that load across the gap, and picking the wrong size risks a sagging ceiling, cracked drywall, or a door that won't close right a year later.

The door header size calculator takes the guesswork out of that decision. Enter your opening width, the load coming from above, and your lumber choice, and it tells you the minimum header size that meets standard framing requirements. This article covers the method behind that number, four real framing scenarios, and the mistakes that lead to undersized headers hiding behind finished drywall.

What Is a Door Header Size Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A door header size calculator determines the minimum lumber size needed to span a doorway or window opening in a load-bearing wall, based on the width of the opening and the load it carries from above. It's used by contractors framing new openings, homeowners planning a DIY doorway widening, and remodelers removing walls for open-concept layouts. The core method matches your opening span and roof or floor load against prescriptive header tables from the residential building code.

Getting this wrong risks a header that deflects under load, creating a visibly sagging ceiling, cracked drywall above the opening, or in severe cases, a header that fails outright under snow or occupancy load.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these measurements and load details before running the calculator.

The clear width of the door or window opening, measured in feet, from one rough opening edge to the other.
Whether the wall is load-bearing, since non-bearing walls only need a header sized for the door frame itself, not structural loads.
The building's roof span or number of floors above the opening, since this determines the total load the header carries.
The ground snow load for your region, since heavier snow loads require larger headers for the same opening width.
The lumber species and grade you plan to use, such as Douglas fir, SPF, or engineered LVL.
Whether the header sits under a single story or supports an additional floor above, since multi-story loads change the required size significantly.

How to Use This Door Header Size Calculator — Step by Step

Enter your opening and load details in this order for an accurate header recommendation.

Enter the clear width of your door or window opening in feet and inches.
Confirm whether the wall is load-bearing, since this changes which sizing table the calculator applies.
Select the load condition, choosing whether the header supports roof only, roof plus one floor, or roof plus two floors.
Enter your region's ground snow load, found in your local building department's code amendments if you're unsure.
Choose your lumber species and grade, or select a standard engineered lumber option like LVL.
Review the calculated minimum header size, shown as a specific lumber dimension like a double 2x10 or triple 2x12.
Confirm the result against your local code's prescriptive header table before finalizing your framing plan.

The Door Header Size Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

A header works the same way structurally as any beam, carrying load from above and transferring it down to the jack studs on either side of the opening. Rather than running a full engineering calculation every time, most residential framing uses prescriptive tables that match opening width and load condition directly to a header size, based on the underlying beam bending principles.

Required Header Depth ≈ Span (ft) × Load Factor

Required Header Depth — The minimum lumber depth needed, measured in inches, commonly ranging from 4 inches for a narrow window to 12 inches or more for a wide garage door opening.
Span — The clear width of the opening, measured in feet, typically 3 to 18 feet for standard residential doors, windows, and garage openings.
Load Factor — A multiplier reflecting roof and floor load above the opening, higher for multi-story construction or heavy snow regions, and built into standard prescriptive tables rather than calculated from scratch by most builders.

The intuition mirrors basic beam theory: a wider span creates more bending moment for the same load, so it needs a deeper header to keep bending stress within safe limits, just like sizing a floor joist or roof rafter. This approach follows the International Residential Code (IRC) Table R602.7(1), which provides prescriptive header spans without requiring a full engineering calculation for common residential conditions.

Door Header Size Calculator — Worked Examples

Example 1: Beginner Interior Door Widening

A homeowner wants to widen an interior closet doorway from 24 inches to 36 inches, and the wall is confirmed non-load-bearing since it runs parallel to the ceiling joists above with no structural load resting on it.

Confirm the wall is non-load-bearing, meaning it carries no roof or floor load beyond the wall's own weight.
Since no structural load transfers through this wall, a minimal header sized to support just the door frame and wall covering is sufficient.
Select a standard double 2x4 flat header, common for non-bearing partition walls regardless of opening width up to about 6 feet.
Confirm no additional support posts or engineered lumber are needed for this application.

This homeowner can proceed with a simple double 2x4 header laid flat, since non-bearing walls don't require the load calculations that structural headers do. This is one of the more forgiving framing tasks for a confident DIYer, though confirming the wall really is non-bearing before cutting is still essential.

Example 2: Professional Load-Bearing Exterior Door

A contractor is installing a new 5-foot-wide sliding patio door in a load-bearing exterior wall, supporting roof load only with a 30-pound-per-square-foot ground snow load, in a home using Douglas fir framing lumber.

Confirm the wall is load-bearing, supporting roof load transferred down through the exterior wall.
Reference the IRC prescriptive header table for a roof-only load condition at 30 psf ground snow load.
Look up the required header size for a 5-foot span under this load condition: a double 2x10.
Confirm the table's building width assumption matches the home's actual roof span, typically based on a 28-foot supported roof width in standard tables.

This contractor should install a double 2x10 header for this opening, along with the correct number of jack studs, typically two on each side for a span this wide under a roof-only load. This result assumes standard IRC table conditions, so verifying the home's actual roof span against the table's assumed building width is a necessary final check.

Example 3: Edge Case — Wide Garage Door Opening Under Two Floors

An engineer is reviewing a 16-foot-wide garage door opening in a home where the header also supports one floor of living space above the garage, a condition that pushes well beyond typical prescriptive table limits.

Recognize that a 16-foot span carrying roof plus one floor of load exceeds the maximum span covered by most standard IRC prescriptive header tables, which commonly top out around 12 to 14 feet for this load condition.
Since prescriptive tables don't cover this span and load combination, a full structural engineering calculation is required instead of a table lookup.
Estimate that a span this wide under this load condition will likely require an engineered LVL header, possibly a triple or quadruple 1.75-inch by 16-inch LVL, or a steel flitch beam.
Confirm the final size only through an actual engineering calculation, since this configuration falls outside safe prescriptive limits.

This example shows a clear boundary case where a calculator or table lookup isn't enough. This engineer needs to run full beam bending and deflection calculations, or specify a manufactured engineered beam with published span tables from the manufacturer, since a 16-foot garage opening under two stories of load is a genuinely engineered condition, not a prescriptive one.

Example 4: Regional Variant — High Snow Load Mountain Region

A builder in a Colorado mountain community is framing an 8-foot-wide window opening in a load-bearing wall under a 70-pound-per-square-foot ground snow load, significantly higher than typical lowland snow loads, supporting roof load only.

Confirm the wall is load-bearing under a roof-only load condition.
Reference the IRC prescriptive header table specifically for the 70 psf ground snow load column, since header size tables vary by snow load region.
Look up the required header size for an 8-foot span at this elevated snow load: a triple 2x12.
Compare this against the same 8-foot span at a standard 30 psf snow load, which would only require a double 2x10, showing the meaningful size increase driven by regional snow load.

This builder needs the triple 2x12 header specifically because of the high mountain snow load, a full size category larger than the same opening would need in a milder climate. This example shows why using a generic header chart without checking the correct snow load column for your specific region can significantly undersize a header in high snow load areas.

Door Header Size Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

A small header result, like a double 2x6 or double 2x8, typically applies to narrow openings under 4 feet wide carrying roof load only, common for standard windows and single doors. A mid-range result, like a double 2x10 or double 2x12, covers most standard exterior doors, sliding doors, and moderate window openings up to about 6 to 8 feet wide.

A large result, requiring engineered lumber like LVL or a steel beam, typically signals a wide garage door opening, a header supporting multiple floors, or a span that exceeds standard prescriptive table limits entirely. These larger headers often need professional engineering rather than a simple table lookup.

The most common misunderstanding is assuming a header size scales only with opening width. In reality, the load condition above the header, whether it's roof only, roof plus one floor, or roof plus two floors, often has just as much impact on required size as the span itself, sometimes more.

If your calculated result points to engineered lumber or falls outside standard table limits, that's a signal to bring in a structural engineer rather than trying to extrapolate from a table designed for smaller spans. For openings comfortably within standard table ranges, the prescriptive result is generally reliable and code-accepted without additional engineering.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Opening width has a strong, non-linear effect on required header size, since wider spans create significantly more bending moment for the same load. Moving from a 4-foot opening to an 8-foot opening under the same roof-only load condition typically jumps the required header from a double 2x8 to a double 2x12, more than doubling the lumber depth for double the span.

Load condition changes the entire table you're referencing, not just a multiplier on the result. The same 6-foot opening might need only a double 2x8 under roof load alone, but jump to a double 2x12 or larger once it's supporting a full floor of living space above, since floor loads are typically heavier and more consistently applied than roof loads.

Ground snow load shifts the required size within the roof-load category specifically, since heavier snow accumulation directly increases the load the header must carry. A region with 20 psf ground snow load might need only a double 2x8 for a 6-foot opening, while the same opening in a 50 psf snow region often requires a double 2x10 or larger.

Here's how opening width changes required header size for a constant roof-only load at 30 psf ground snow load:

This table shows the pattern clearly. Required header depth climbs steadily with span, and once you cross roughly 8 to 10 feet under typical roof loads, standard dimensional lumber often gives way to engineered options.

Door Header Size Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming every wall is either fully bearing or fully non-bearing without verifying. Some walls carry partial loads from point loads above, like a support post, and these situations need individual engineering review beyond a standard prescriptive table.
Using a header table for the wrong ground snow load. Header tables vary significantly by snow load column, and grabbing a generic 30 psf table result for a high snow load region undersizes the header dangerously.
Forgetting jack stud requirements alongside header size. A correctly sized header still needs the right number of jack studs beneath it to transfer load safely down to the foundation, and skipping this creates a weak point even with proper header lumber.
Extrapolating prescriptive tables beyond their published span limits. Most IRC tables cap out around 12 to 18 feet depending on load condition, and spans beyond that limit require actual engineering, not table extrapolation.
Mixing up nominal and actual lumber dimensions when selecting header stock. A "2x10" measures 1.5 by 9.25 inches in reality, and header tables already account for actual dimensions, so double-checking your lumber matches the table's assumption matters.
Ignoring point loads from above, like a girder truss or support post landing directly over the header. Standard prescriptive tables assume uniformly distributed load, and a concentrated point load requires separate engineering analysis.
Skipping a permit and inspection on load-bearing wall modifications. Removing or widening an opening in a bearing wall almost always requires a permit, and skipping this step risks both legal liability and an unverified structural change.
Using outdated header tables that don't reflect current code editions. The IRC updates its prescriptive tables periodically, and older span tables from a previous code cycle may not match current minimum requirements in your jurisdiction.

Key Terms Explained

Header

A horizontal structural member installed above a door or window opening to carry the load that would otherwise rest on the missing wall section.

Load-Bearing Wall

A wall that supports structural weight from the roof or floors above, distinct from a non-bearing partition wall that only carries its own weight.

Jack Stud

A shortened wall stud that supports the header directly and transfers its load down to the foundation, also called a trimmer stud.

King Stud

A full-height stud running from the top plate to the bottom plate on either side of a rough opening, providing lateral support to the jack studs.

Ground Snow Load

The weight of snow accumulation used in structural design for a given region, measured in pounds per square foot, and a major driver of header sizing in northern climates.

Prescriptive Table

A pre-calculated code table that provides a minimum structural size for common conditions without requiring an individual engineering calculation.

Rough Opening

The framed opening dimension, slightly larger than the finished door or window unit, that the header and jack studs must accommodate.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies the prescriptive header span tables from the 2021 International Residential Code, Table R602.7(1), published by the International Code Council. It assumes standard residential construction with a maximum supported roof span of 28 feet or 36 feet depending on the specific table referenced, and covers load conditions from roof-only through roof plus two floors.

The tool excludes point loads, non-standard framing configurations, and spans exceeding the published prescriptive table limits, all of which require individual engineering analysis rather than a table lookup. It assumes standard dimensional lumber species commonly used in residential framing, with engineered lumber options like LVL sized separately per manufacturer span tables. Results are rounded up to the next standard lumber size available from typical suppliers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Door Header Size Calculator

1. What does a door header size calculator actually calculate?

It calculates the minimum lumber size needed to safely span a door or window opening based on the opening width and the load condition above it. This tells you what header dimension, like a double 2x10, to use when framing the opening.

2. How accurate is a door header size calculator?

It's accurate for standard residential conditions covered by IRC prescriptive tables, since it applies the same code-accepted values a building inspector would check against. Accuracy breaks down for spans, loads, or configurations that fall outside standard table limits, which require individual engineering instead.

3. What is the door header sizing method in simple terms?

Match your opening's width and the load condition above it, whether roof only or roof plus floors, against a prescriptive code table that already accounts for standard beam bending principles. The table gives you a minimum lumber size without requiring you to run the underlying structural math yourself.

4. Do header size requirements differ by region?

Yes, ground snow load varies significantly by region and directly affects required header size, so the same opening width can need a noticeably different header in a high snow load mountain area versus a mild coastal climate. Always use the snow load column matching your specific location.

5. When does a door header size calculator not apply?

It doesn't apply to spans exceeding standard prescriptive table limits, typically beyond 12 to 18 feet depending on load condition, or to openings carrying concentrated point loads from a post or girder above. These situations require a licensed engineer's calculation instead of a table lookup.

6. How can I get a more precise header size result?

Confirm your exact ground snow load from your local building department rather than estimating, and verify your home's actual roof span against the table's assumed building width. For anything near a table's span limit or involving unusual loading, a structural engineer's calculation will be more precise than a prescriptive table.

7. What's a typical header size for a standard exterior door?

Most standard 3-foot exterior doors under typical roof-only loads need a double 2x8 or double 2x10, depending on regional snow load. Wider sliding or French doors in the 5 to 6 foot range commonly need a double 2x10 or double 2x12 under similar conditions.

8. Do I need a structural engineer to size a door header?

For openings comfortably within standard IRC prescriptive table limits, a calculator and code table lookup are typically sufficient and code-accepted. For wide garage door openings, multi-story load conditions, or any span exceeding table limits, hire a licensed structural engineer before proceeding.
