Cutting rafters too short is a mistake you can't fix with an extra piece nailed on. Every rafter needs to run the exact right length to reach from the ridge board down past the wall plate to the desired overhang, and that length depends entirely on getting the roof pitch and building width right before the first cut. A miscalculated rafter length means either a roofline that doesn't reach the wall correctly or an overhang that comes up short of the design.

A rafter length calculator works out the exact rafter length needed based on your building width, roof pitch, and desired overhang, using the same trigonometry framers have relied on for generations. Whether you're framing a new home, a garage addition, or a shed roof, this number is what determines your lumber order and keeps every rafter in the roof system consistent.

What Is a Rafter Length Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A rafter length calculator determines the total length of lumber needed for each roof rafter, based on the building's span, the roof's pitch, and any overhang extending past the wall. The core method uses the roof angle from the pitch to calculate the rafter's diagonal length using the Pythagorean theorem, then adds extra length for the overhang tail. Framers, truss designers, and DIY builders all use this number before ordering lumber or cutting a single rafter. Getting it wrong means ordering material too short to reach the ridge, or worse, discovering the shortfall mid-installation after the walls are already framed.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these measurements before calculating rafter length, since roof framing depends on precise span and pitch figures.

The building's total span, measured as the horizontal distance between the outside edges of the two supporting walls.
Your roof's pitch, expressed as rise over a 12-inch run, such as 6/12 or 9/12.
Your desired overhang length, measured horizontally from the outside wall edge to where the rafter tail ends.
The thickness of your ridge board, since this slightly shortens the horizontal run each rafter needs to span.
Whether the roof is a simple gable design or includes hips and valleys, since those need different length calculations than a standard common rafter.
Your rafter lumber's actual, not nominal, dimensions, since these affect birdsmouth notching and any length lost to seat cuts.

How to Use This Rafter Length Calculator — Step by Step

Follow these steps to turn your building dimensions into an accurate rafter length.

Measure the building's total span between the outside edges of the two walls the roof connects.
Divide the span in half to get the horizontal run each rafter needs to cover, then subtract half the ridge board thickness.
Enter your roof pitch so the calculator can determine the roof angle using the arctangent of rise over run.
Let the calculator apply the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal rafter length covering that horizontal run.
Enter your desired overhang length, measured horizontally past the outside wall.
Let the calculator add the extra rafter length needed to extend that overhang along the same roof angle.
Review the total rafter length and add a small margin, typically 2 to 3 inches, for ridge and tail trimming during installation.

The Rafter Length Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

Rafter length calculation is a direct application of the Pythagorean theorem, treating the horizontal run and vertical rise of the roof as the two legs of a right triangle and the rafter itself as the hypotenuse. This works because a sloped rafter always covers more linear distance than its horizontal run alone, and the steeper the pitch, the greater that difference becomes. This calculation follows standard rafter framing geometry referenced in the International Residential Code, Section R802, which governs rafter span and framing requirements for residential construction.

Rafter Run = (Building Span ÷ 2) − (Ridge Thickness ÷ 2) Roof Angle = ARCTAN(Rise ÷ 12) Rafter Length (Common) = Rafter Run ÷ COS(Roof Angle) Overhang Length = Overhang Run ÷ COS(Roof Angle) Total Rafter Length = Rafter Length (Common) + Overhang Length

Building Span: the total horizontal distance between supporting walls, in feet, typically 20 to 40 feet for common residential spans.
Ridge Thickness: the width of the ridge board, in inches, typically 1.5 inches for standard dimensional lumber.
Rise: the vertical rise per 12 inches of run, in inches, typically 4 to 12 for common residential pitches.
Roof Angle: the resulting slope angle in degrees, typically 18 to 45 degrees for standard residential roofs.
Overhang Run: the horizontal distance the rafter extends past the wall, in inches, typically 12 to 24 inches.
Total Rafter Length: the full board length needed, in feet, typically 10 to 22 feet depending on span and pitch.

The formula works because the rafter's actual physical length always exceeds its horizontal run once any slope is introduced, and dividing run by the cosine of the roof angle is the standard trigonometric method for finding that hypotenuse length. Adding the overhang using the same angle keeps the tail's slope consistent with the rest of the rafter, which is what gives a roofline its clean, continuous edge.

Rafter Length Calculator — Worked Examples

Beginner Scenario: Simple Gable Roof on a 24-Foot Span

A DIY builder is framing a gable roof on a 24-foot-wide garage with a 6/12 pitch and a 1.5-inch ridge board. They want a 12-inch overhang on each side.

Rafter run: (24 ÷ 2) − (1.5 ÷ 2 ÷ 12) = 12 − 0.0625 = 11.94 feet.
Roof angle: ARCTAN(6 ÷ 12) = 26.6 degrees.
Common rafter length: 11.94 ÷ COS(26.6°) = 11.94 ÷ 0.894 = 13.36 feet.
Overhang length: (12 ÷ 12) ÷ COS(26.6°) = 1 ÷ 0.894 = 1.12 feet.
Total rafter length: 13.36 + 1.12 = 14.48 feet.

This builder should order rafters at least 15 feet long to allow for the 14.48-foot calculated length plus trimming margin at the ridge and tail cuts. Standard 16-foot dimensional lumber works well here, leaving enough extra for accurate cutting without waste.

Professional Scenario: Contractor Framing a Wide-Span Home with a Steep 10/12 Pitch

A contractor is framing a 32-foot-span home with a steep 10/12 pitch and a thicker 2-inch ridge board, common on larger custom homes. The design calls for an 18-inch overhang to match the home's architectural style.

Rafter run: (32 ÷ 2) − (2 ÷ 2 ÷ 12) = 16 − 0.083 = 15.92 feet.
Roof angle: ARCTAN(10 ÷ 12) = 39.8 degrees.
Common rafter length: 15.92 ÷ COS(39.8°) = 15.92 ÷ 0.769 = 20.7 feet.
Overhang length: (18 ÷ 12) ÷ COS(39.8°) = 1.5 ÷ 0.769 = 1.95 feet.
Total rafter length: 20.7 + 1.95 = 22.65 feet.

The contractor now knows each rafter needs to be at least 23 feet long, which exceeds standard dimensional lumber lengths and likely requires engineered lumber like an LVL or a scarfed connection between two shorter boards. This is exactly the kind of result that should prompt a conversation with a truss manufacturer or engineer before committing to stick-framing every rafter on site.

Edge Case: Narrow Shed Roof Addition with a Low 2/12 Pitch

A homeowner is adding a small shed roof extension off the back of their house, spanning only 10 feet with a shallow 2/12 pitch and a 6-inch overhang, since it's a single-slope shed roof rather than a full gable with a ridge board.

For a shed roof, the full span acts as the rafter run since there's no ridge board splitting it: 10 − 0 (no ridge board to subtract) = 10 feet.
Roof angle: ARCTAN(2 ÷ 12) = 9.5 degrees.
Common rafter length: 10 ÷ COS(9.5°) = 10 ÷ 0.986 = 10.14 feet.
Overhang length: (6 ÷ 12) ÷ COS(9.5°) = 0.5 ÷ 0.986 = 0.51 feet.
Total rafter length: 10.14 + 0.51 = 10.65 feet.

This case shows why a single-slope shed roof calculates differently from a gable roof, since the full span becomes one continuous rafter run rather than splitting at a ridge board. The homeowner should order rafters at least 11 feet long, which fits comfortably within standard lumber lengths for this small addition.

Regional Variant: Metric Measurements for a Modular Home Import

A builder working with a modular home kit specified in metric units has a building span of 8.5 meters, a roof pitch given directly as 30 degrees, and a 300-millimeter ridge board.

Rafter run: (8.5 ÷ 2) − (0.3 ÷ 2) = 4.25 − 0.15 = 4.1 meters.
Roof angle: given directly as 30 degrees, no conversion from rise and run needed.
Common rafter length: 4.1 ÷ COS(30°) = 4.1 ÷ 0.866 = 4.73 meters.
Overhang length: assuming a 0.4-meter overhang: 0.4 ÷ COS(30°) = 0.4 ÷ 0.866 = 0.46 meters.
Total rafter length: 4.73 + 0.46 = 5.19 meters, or converted to feet: 5.19 × 3.281 = 17.03 feet.

Because the modular kit's structural components are specified in metric units but US lumber suppliers sell in imperial lengths, converting the final rafter length to feet is necessary before placing a domestic lumber order. Builders working across both systems should complete the full geometric calculation in one unit system before converting the final answer, to avoid compounding small rounding errors.

Rafter Length Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

Your result tells you the minimum board length needed for each rafter, and where that number falls has real implications for material sourcing. A short result, under 14 feet, typically fits comfortably within standard dimensional lumber lengths available at most lumber yards. A long result, above 18 feet, often exceeds common stock lengths and pushes toward engineered lumber, a scarfed splice connection, or a truss system instead of stick-built rafters.

Most residential common rafters fall between 12 and 20 feet depending on building span and pitch, with wider spans and steeper pitches both pushing that number higher. The most common misunderstanding is assuming the calculated rafter length is the exact board length to purchase, when in practice you need extra length beyond the calculated figure for the ridge cut angle, the birdsmouth notch, and any trimming at the tail.

If your result comes in longer than standard lumber stock, don't default to a scarf splice without checking whether an engineered wood product or pre-fabricated truss system makes more structural and cost sense for the span. Long stick-built rafters carry more risk of warping and inconsistency across a full roof system than a manufactured truss designed specifically for that span and load.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Roof pitch has a compounding effect on rafter length that becomes more pronounced as pitch increases, since it's inside the cosine function in the denominator. Moving from a 4/12 pitch to an 8/12 pitch on a 16-foot rafter run increases rafter length by about 10 percent, but moving from 8/12 to 12/12 on the same run adds another 12 percent on top of that, showing the effect accelerates rather than staying constant.

Building span has a direct, proportional relationship with rafter length at a fixed pitch, since doubling the horizontal run essentially doubles the rafter length needed. A 20-foot span at 6/12 pitch needs roughly an 11.2-foot common rafter, while a 40-foot span at the same pitch needs roughly 22.4 feet, exactly double.

Overhang length adds a smaller but still meaningful amount to total rafter length, and that addition also scales with pitch. A 12-inch overhang on a low 3/12 pitch adds about 1.04 feet to total length, while the same 12-inch overhang on a steep 12/12 pitch adds about 1.41 feet, since the steeper angle stretches the overhang's actual length too.

Roof Pitch | Roof Angle (deg) | 16ft Run Rafter Length | Increase from 4/12 4/12 | 18.4 | 16.87 ft | — 6/12 | 26.6 | 17.89 ft | +1.02 ft 8/12 | 33.7 | 19.24 ft | +2.37 ft 12/12 | 45.0 | 22.63 ft | +5.76 ft

The table above shows how sharply rafter length climbs on steeper pitches even with an unchanged building span, which is exactly why steep-roof designs often require longer or engineered lumber that a low-slope design of the same footprint would never need.

Rafter Length Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the full building span as the rafter run without dividing by two and subtracting for ridge board thickness, which roughly doubles the calculated length in error.
Forgetting to add overhang length separately, since it uses the same roof angle but represents genuinely additional material beyond the common rafter run.
Confusing shed roof calculations, where the full span is one continuous run, with gable roof calculations, where the span splits at a ridge board.
Ordering lumber at exactly the calculated length with no margin for the ridge plumb cut, birdsmouth notch, and tail trim.
Mixing rise-over-run pitch notation with a direct angle measurement when working from imported or engineered plans specified in degrees.
Assuming standard dimensional lumber covers any calculated rafter length, when spans and pitches on larger homes often exceed common stock lengths.
Applying the same rafter length across a roof with mixed pitches or hip and valley sections, when those areas need separate, more complex length calculations.
Skipping a check on actual versus nominal ridge board thickness, which introduces a small but compounding error across a full run of rafters.

Key Terms Explained

Common Rafter A standard rafter running from the ridge board to the wall plate, covering the main slope of a gable roof.

Rafter Run The horizontal distance a rafter covers, measured from the wall plate to the point directly below the ridge.

Rafter Rise The vertical distance a rafter climbs over its run, determined by the roof's pitch.

Ridge Board The horizontal framing member at the peak of the roof where opposing rafters meet and are fastened.

Overhang The portion of the rafter extending past the exterior wall, forming the roof's eave.

Hip Rafter A rafter running diagonally from the ridge to an outside corner of the building, requiring a different length formula than a common rafter.

Valley Rafter A rafter running diagonally where two roof slopes meet at an inside corner, also requiring specialized length calculation.

Plumb Cut The vertical cut made at the ridge end of a rafter so it sits flush against the ridge board.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies the Pythagorean theorem to standard common rafter geometry, consistent with rafter span and framing guidance referenced in the International Residential Code, Section R802. Rafter run is calculated from half the building span minus half the ridge board thickness, and roof angle is derived from the pitch using the arctangent function.

The calculator assumes a simple gable roof with common rafters unless a shed roof configuration is specified, and it doesn't automatically calculate hip or valley rafter lengths, which require additional trigonometry beyond standard common rafter geometry. It also doesn't account for birdsmouth notch length lost at the seat cut, which should be added separately when ordering final lumber length. Results are rounded to the nearest hundredth of a foot for layout precision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rafter Length Calculator

What Does a Rafter Length Calculator Calculate?

It calculates the total length of lumber needed for a roof rafter based on the building span, roof pitch, and any overhang extending past the wall. It uses the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal rafter length covering the horizontal run.

How Accurate Is a Rafter Length Calculator's Result?

It is mathematically exact once you enter the correct building span, pitch, and overhang because the underlying trigonometry involves no estimation. Field accuracy depends on confirming the actual ridge board thickness and allowing extra length for cutting waste at the ridge and tail.

What Is the Rafter Length Formula in Simple Terms?

Take half the building span, subtract half the ridge board thickness, then divide that run by the cosine of the roof angle to get the common rafter length. Add the overhang length calculated using the same angle to find the total rafter length.

Do Rafter Length Calculations Differ Between US and Metric Framing Plans?

Yes. US plans typically express pitch as rise over a 12-inch run, while metric and European plans often specify the roof angle directly in degrees. Converting the building span and ridge thickness to consistent units before calculating helps avoid errors in the final rafter length.

When Does a Rafter Length Calculator Not Give a Usable Result?

It does not calculate hip or valley rafter lengths, which require additional trigonometry beyond the standard common rafter formula. It also does not account for roofs with mixed pitches or dormers, which require separate calculations for each distinct roof section.

How Can I Get a More Precise Rafter Length?

Confirm the ridge board's actual thickness rather than assuming a standard 1.5 inches. Measure the building span at the actual top plate instead of estimating it from foundation dimensions. Add 2 to 3 inches of extra length beyond the calculated measurement for ridge and tail trimming.

What Is a Typical Rafter Length for a Residential Home?

Most residential common rafters fall between 12 and 20 feet, depending on the building span and roof pitch. Wider homes and steeper roofs both increase rafter length. Rafters exceeding about 18 feet may require engineered lumber or a truss system.

Should I Hire a Professional to Calculate Rafter Lengths for My Project?

For a simple gable roof using standard pitches and spans, careful use of this calculator may be sufficient for a DIY framing project. For wide spans, steep pitches, hip and valley roofs, or results exceeding standard lumber lengths, a structural engineer or truss manufacturer should be consulted.
