Filling a pool, sizing a fish tank, or estimating irrigation needs all come down to one question: how much water fits in this space? A gallons per square foot calculator answers that question fast, converting surface area and depth into a precise volume figure you can trust for planning, budgeting, or equipment sizing.

Guessing at water volume leads to real problems. Order too little pool shock and you're back at the store mid-summer. Undersize a water tank and you run dry before the next fill. This guide breaks down exactly how the calculation works, walks through four real scenarios, and shows you where people commonly get it wrong.

What Is a Gallons per Square Foot Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A gallons per square foot calculator converts a surface area and water depth into total gallons, giving pool owners, aquarium keepers, and property managers an accurate volume figure. It works by multiplying square footage by depth in feet, then converting cubic feet to gallons using the fixed conversion factor of 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. Landscapers use it for irrigation planning, pool companies use it for chemical dosing, and homeowners use it for tank and cistern sizing. Getting this number wrong means over-dosing pool chemicals, underfilling a tank, or ordering the wrong pump capacity.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these measurements before entering anything into the calculator.

The surface area of the space in square feet, either measured directly or calculated from length times width.
The average depth of the water in feet, accounting for sloped pool floors or tapered tanks.
Whether the container has a uniform or variable depth, since irregular shapes need a different approach.
The shape of the space, rectangular, circular, or irregular, since this affects how you calculate area.
Any freeboard or unfilled space you want to exclude from the total volume.
The unit system you're working in, since some tanks and pools are specified in liters or square meters.

How to Use This Gallons per Square Foot Calculator — Step by Step

Enter your measurements in order, starting with the shape of your space.

Measure the length and width of your space in feet if it's rectangular, or the diameter if it's circular.
Calculate or enter the surface area in square feet.
Measure the water depth in feet, using an average if the floor slopes.
Enter the depth into the calculator alongside your surface area.
Select gallons as your output unit, or liters if you're working in metric.
Review the calculated volume and compare it against your tank or pool manufacturer's rated capacity.
Adjust for any partial fill level if you don't plan to fill to full depth.

The Gallons per Square Foot Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

This calculation converts a flat area measurement into a three-dimensional volume by adding depth, then translates cubic feet into the more familiar gallon unit. The math is straightforward once you have accurate area and depth figures.

Gallons = Surface Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) × 7.48

Surface Area — the flat footprint of the pool, tank, or space, measured in square feet, typically ranging from 10 to 1,000+ sq ft.
Depth — the average water depth, measured in feet, typically ranging from 0.5 to 12 feet depending on the application.
7.48 — the fixed conversion constant representing gallons in one cubic foot of water.

The formula works because volume is simply area multiplied by height, and the 7.48 constant bridges the gap between cubic feet, a construction-friendly unit, and gallons, the unit most water equipment and chemicals are measured in. This is a widely accepted industry formula used throughout pool maintenance, water storage, and irrigation industries, and it derives directly from the standard cubic-foot-to-gallon conversion of 7.48052 gallons.

Gallons per Square Foot Calculator — Worked Examples

Beginner Scenario: A Small Backyard Kiddie Pool

A parent is filling a round kiddie pool with a 6-foot diameter and a uniform depth of 1 foot.

Calculate the area of the circle: 3.14159 × (3 feet radius)² = 28.27 square feet.
Multiply area by depth: 28.27 × 1 = 28.27 cubic feet.
Multiply by the conversion constant: 28.27 × 7.48 = 211.5 gallons.

This kiddie pool holds approximately 211.5 gallons. At a typical garden hose flow rate of 9 gallons per minute, filling it would take roughly 23 to 24 minutes.

Professional Scenario: An In-Ground Rectangular Pool for a Pool Service Company

A pool service technician needs to calculate chemical dosing for a rectangular in-ground pool measuring 32 feet long, 16 feet wide, with an average depth of 5 feet due to a sloped deep end.

Calculate the surface area: 32 × 16 = 512 square feet.
Multiply area by average depth: 512 × 5 = 2,560 cubic feet.
Multiply by the conversion constant: 2,560 × 7.48 = 19,148.8 gallons.

This pool holds roughly 19,149 gallons. Pool chemical dosing charts typically reference volume in thousands of gallons, so this technician would round to 19,000 for chlorine and pH adjustment calculations, then fine-tune based on test strip readings.

Edge Case: An Irregularly Shaped Koi Pond with Variable Depth

A landscaper is estimating volume for a kidney-shaped koi pond with an average surface area of 180 square feet, but the depth varies from 1.5 feet at the shallow shelf to 4 feet in the deep zone, averaging 2.5 feet across the whole pond.

Use the average depth across the full pond footprint: 2.5 feet.
Multiply area by average depth: 180 × 2.5 = 450 cubic feet.
Multiply by the conversion constant: 450 × 7.48 = 3,366 gallons.

This pond holds approximately 3,366 gallons, though this figure is an estimate since it relies on averaged depth rather than a precise volumetric survey. For koi stocking density and filtration sizing, the landscaper should treat this as a working estimate and verify with a flow meter during the first fill.

Regional Variant: A Metric Water Storage Tank

A property owner in a region using metric measurements has a cylindrical water tank with a 2-meter diameter and a water depth of 1.5 meters, and needs the volume in US gallons for a pump rated in gallons per minute.

Convert diameter to feet: 2 meters × 3.281 = 6.56 feet, giving a radius of 3.28 feet.
Calculate area in square feet: 3.14159 × (3.28)² = 33.8 square feet.
Convert depth to feet: 1.5 meters × 3.281 = 4.92 feet.
Multiply area by depth: 33.8 × 4.92 = 166.3 cubic feet.
Multiply by the conversion constant: 166.3 × 7.48 = 1,244.1 gallons.

This tank holds approximately 1,244 gallons, a figure the property owner can now match directly against a US-rated pump's gallons-per-minute output to estimate fill or drain time.

Gallons per Square Foot Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

A low result, under 500 gallons, typically describes small containers like kiddie pools, aquariums, or small stock tanks. A mid-range result, 500 to 20,000 gallons, covers most residential pools, hot tubs, and irrigation cisterns. Anything above 20,000 gallons usually points to a commercial pool, large agricultural tank, or municipal water feature.

The most common misunderstanding is treating a pool's stated dimensions as the actual fill volume. Sloped floors, rounded corners, and skimmer cutouts all reduce real volume below what a simple length-times-width-times-depth calculation suggests, sometimes by 5 to 10 percent.

If your result seems too high compared to your fill records, double-check whether you used maximum depth instead of average depth. Practitioners in the pool service industry always use average depth for chemical dosing, since dosing based on max depth over-treats the water and wastes chemical.

If you're sizing equipment like a pump or heater, round up slightly from your calculated volume to build in a safety margin, since equipment undersized for actual volume struggles to maintain temperature or circulation. For chemical dosing, use your calculated figure as-is, since over-dosing based on inflated volume estimates wastes money and can create unsafe chemical concentrations.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Depth has the most direct multiplying effect on total gallons, since it's a linear multiplier against a fixed area. A pool that goes from a uniform 4-foot depth to a uniform 6-foot depth, holding the same 500 square foot footprint, jumps from 14,960 gallons to 22,440 gallons, a 50 percent increase matching the 50 percent depth increase.

Surface area changes compound just as directly. Doubling a tank's footprint from 100 to 200 square feet, at a constant 3-foot depth, doubles the gallon count from 2,244 to 4,488 gallons.

Average depth matters enormously for sloped pools, where using the deep end's measurement instead of a true average can overstate volume by 20 percent or more. A pool with a 3-foot shallow end and 8-foot deep end averages closer to 5 to 5.5 feet, not the 8-foot maximum some owners mistakely enter.

Here's how volume scales with depth for a fixed 400 square foot pool:

Depth (feet) | Cubic Feet | Gallons 3 | 1,200 | 8,976 4 | 1,600 | 11,968 5 | 2,000 | 14,960 6 | 2,400 | 17,952

Shape matters too, since a circular pool of a given diameter holds noticeably less volume than a square pool with the same width, because a circle's area is always smaller than a square inscribing it. A 20-foot diameter circular pool covers about 314 square feet, while a 20-by-20-foot square pool covers 400 square feet, a 27 percent difference in footprint alone.

Gallons per Square Foot Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using maximum depth instead of average depth. Sloped pools and ponds need a true average depth, or the calculated volume will overstate what's actually in the water.
Forgetting to account for irregular shapes. Kidney-shaped pools, freeform ponds, and curved tank walls don't fit simple rectangle or circle formulas without adjustment.
Mixing inches and feet in the same calculation. Depth entered in inches instead of feet inflates the result by a factor of 12.
Ignoring skimmer and equipment cutouts. Built-in pool features like skimmers, steps, and tanning ledges reduce actual water volume below the raw footprint calculation.
Applying the wrong conversion constant. Some calculators use 7.5 as a rounded shortcut instead of 7.48, which introduces small but compounding errors on large volumes.
Assuming metric tanks convert cleanly without proper unit conversion. Skipping the meters-to-feet conversion step before applying the formula produces wildly incorrect gallon figures.
Using this calculator for flow rate or fill time. This tool calculates static volume only; estimating how long a fill takes requires a separate flow rate calculation.
Overlooking freeboard space. Tanks and pools aren't usually filled to the very top edge, so subtract a few inches of freeboard before calculating usable volume.

Key Terms Explained

Surface Area

Surface area is the flat footprint measurement of a pool, tank, or pond, expressed in square feet.

Average Depth

Average depth is the mean water depth across a sloped or variable-depth container, used instead of maximum depth for accurate volume calculations.

Cubic Foot

A cubic foot is a volume unit equal to a cube one foot on each side, serving as the intermediate step between area and gallons in this formula.

Freeboard

Freeboard is the unfilled space between the water's surface and the top edge of a pool or tank, left intentionally to prevent overflow.

Conversion Constant

The conversion constant of 7.48 represents the fixed number of gallons contained in exactly one cubic foot of water.

Chemical Dosing

Chemical dosing refers to the amount of pool or spa chemicals added based on total water volume, calculated in parts per million relative to gallons.

Fill Rate

Fill rate is the speed at which water enters a pool or tank, typically measured in gallons per minute, used alongside total volume to estimate fill time.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies the standard area-times-depth volume formula, converting cubic feet to gallons using the accepted 7.48 gallons per cubic foot constant. It assumes uniform or properly averaged depth, since true volumetric accuracy for irregular shapes requires either a survey or a segmented calculation the user performs manually. Rounded corners, skimmer cutouts, and built-in steps are excluded from the calculation, since these vary too much by pool design to standardize. Results are rounded to the nearest whole gallon, matching how most pool and water storage industry references display volume figures for practical use.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gallons per Square Foot Calculators

1. What does a gallons per square foot calculator actually calculate?

It calculates total water volume in gallons based on a space's surface area and water depth. This applies to pools, tanks, ponds, and any other container where you know the footprint and depth but need the volume for filling, dosing, or equipment sizing.

2. How accurate is a gallons per square foot calculator?

It's highly accurate for uniform-depth rectangular or circular spaces, typically within 1 to 2 percent of actual volume. Accuracy drops for irregular shapes or sloped floors unless you use a carefully measured average depth.

3. What is the gallons per square foot formula in simple terms?

Multiply surface area in square feet by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then multiply by 7.48 to convert to gallons. That constant represents how many gallons fit inside one cubic foot of water.

4. Does this calculation change for metric measurements?

The formula stays the same, but you need to convert meters to feet and square meters to square feet before applying it. Skipping this conversion step produces incorrect gallon totals since the constant only works with feet-based units.

5. When does this calculator not give a reliable result?

It's unreliable for highly irregular shapes like freeform ponds without a proper average depth measurement. It also doesn't account for underwater features like steps, benches, or equipment that displace water and reduce actual volume.

6. How can I get a more precise gallon estimate?

Break irregular shapes into smaller rectangular or circular sections, calculate each separately, then add the totals together. For pools with sloped floors, measure depth at several points and average them rather than using a single reading.

7. What's a typical gallon count for a residential swimming pool?

Most residential in-ground pools hold between 15,000 and 30,000 gallons, depending on size and depth. Above-ground pools typically range from 3,000 to 15,000 gallons.

8. Should I consult a professional for pool volume calculations?

For chemical dosing on a new or unusually shaped pool, yes, a pool service professional can verify volume against manufacturer specs or a physical fill test. This calculator gives a strong estimate for planning, but precise chemical safety benefits from professional confirmation.
