A can of albacore tuna carries roughly 15 times more mercury than the same weight of salmon. Most people don't know that, and it's why "eat more fish" and "limit your mercury" can both be good advice at once. A fish mercury calculator shows how those two ideas fit together for your body weight, your portions, and the species on your plate.

For US readers, this matters most if you're pregnant, planning a pregnancy, feeding a young child, or eating fish several times a week. Using a fish mercury calculator takes about a minute and replaces guesswork with a number. This guide explains how the calculator works, walks through four real examples, and shows you how to read your result without worry or false comfort.

What Is a Fish Mercury Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A fish mercury calculator estimates how much methylmercury you take in from seafood and compares it with the EPA's safe reference level. It follows one plain-English rule: mercury in the fish, times the portion you eat, divided by your body weight, measured against a daily limit. Parents, pregnant women, dietitians, and regular fish eaters use it to choose species and portion sizes. Get it wrong and you may overshoot the safe level for months, or you may cut out healthy fish like salmon and sardines for no reason.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these details before you open the fish mercury calculator so your result reflects your real habits.

The species of fish you eat, such as canned light tuna, salmon, shrimp, or swordfish.
The form of the fish, because canned albacore and canned light tuna carry very different mercury levels.
Your portion size in ounces or grams, with 4 ounces (113 grams) as the standard adult serving.
How many servings per week you eat of each fish.
The body weight of the person eating the fish, in pounds or kilograms.
Whether the person is pregnant, nursing, or a young child, since stricter guidance applies.

How to Use This Fish Mercury Calculator — Step by Step

Follow these steps in order to get a clear, usable result.

Pick the fish species from the list, or enter its mercury level in parts per million.
Enter your portion size, using the actual weight on your plate.
Type in how many servings you eat each week.
Enter the body weight of the person eating the fish.
Add any second fish you eat regularly, so the total reflects your real diet.
Press calculate and read your percentage of the EPA reference dose.
Check the suggested weekly servings, then adjust species or portions until you're under 100 percent.

The Fish Mercury Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

The calculator multiplies the mercury in your fish by how much you eat, then spreads that amount across your body weight and the days of the week. It then compares the result with the amount EPA considers safe to take in every day over a lifetime. A person who weighs less gets a bigger dose from the same meal.

Weekly mercury (µg) = C × S × F

Daily dose (µg/kg/day) = (C × S × F / 7) / BW

Percent of reference dose = (Daily dose / 0.1) × 100

C is the mercury concentration in the fish, in parts per million (ppm), which equals micrograms per gram. Common fish range from 0.01 to about 1.2.
S is serving size, in grams. A standard adult serving is 113 grams, and a young child's is about 28 to 85 grams.
F is servings per week, from 0 to 7.
BW is body weight, in kilograms. One pound equals 0.4536 kilograms.
0.1 is the EPA reference dose (RfD) for methylmercury, in micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day.

The reference dose comes from the EPA's 2001 methylmercury assessment in its Integrated Risk Information System, which built on a National Research Council review of child development studies. The formula works because mercury builds up in the body over weeks, so what matters is your weekly average. A one-time large meal matters less than a steady habit.

Fish Mercury Calculator — Worked Examples

Beginner Example: A 150-Pound Adult Who Eats Canned Light Tuna Twice a Week

A office worker weighs 150 pounds, or 68 kilograms. She eats two 4-ounce (113 gram) servings of canned light tuna each week. The average mercury level for canned light tuna is about 0.126 ppm, based on FDA monitoring data.

Mercury per serving: 0.126 × 113 = 14.24 µg.
Weekly mercury: 14.24 × 2 = 28.48 µg.
Daily mercury: 28.48 / 7 = 4.07 µg.
Daily dose: 4.07 / 68 = 0.060 µg/kg/day.
Percent of reference dose: 0.060 / 0.1 = 60 percent.
Maximum servings: (0.1 × 7 × 68) / 14.24 = 3.3 servings per week.

She sits comfortably under the reference dose and has room for a third serving. She doesn't need to change anything. If she adds albacore or other higher-mercury fish, she should recalculate.

Professional Example: A Dietitian Counseling a Pregnant Client

A registered dietitian works with a pregnant client who weighs 130 pounds, or 59 kilograms. The client eats salmon twice a week (0.022 ppm) and one can of albacore tuna weekly (0.350 ppm), at 113 grams per serving.

Salmon: 0.022 × 113 × 2 = 4.97 µg per week.
Albacore: 0.350 × 113 × 1 = 39.55 µg per week.
Total weekly mercury: 4.97 + 39.55 = 44.52 µg.
Daily dose: (44.52 / 7) / 59 = 0.108 µg/kg/day.
Percent of reference dose: 108 percent.
Swap albacore for canned light tuna: 14.24 + 4.97 = 19.21 µg per week, so (19.21 / 7) / 59 = 0.047, or 47 percent.

The first plan lands just above the reference dose, which has a built-in safety margin and isn't a toxicity line. Still, the fix is simple. The dietitian should recommend canned light tuna in place of albacore and keep the salmon, which also supplies omega-3 fats.

Edge Case: A 4-Year-Old Who Eats Tuna Sandwiches

A parent feeds her 4-year-old, who weighs 35 pounds or 15.9 kilograms, canned light tuna twice a week. The child's serving is 2 ounces, or 57 grams, which matches FDA portion guidance for young children.

Mercury per serving: 0.126 × 57 = 7.18 µg.
Weekly mercury: 7.18 × 2 = 14.36 µg.
Daily dose: (14.36 / 7) / 15.9 = 0.129 µg/kg/day.
Percent of reference dose: 129 percent.
Maximum servings: (0.1 × 7 × 15.9) / 7.18 = 1.55 servings per week.
Swap to salmon twice weekly: (0.022 × 57 × 2 / 7) / 15.9 = 0.023, or 23 percent.

A small body makes the same food count for much more. The parent should limit light tuna to one serving a week and use salmon, shrimp, or pollock for other meals. A pediatrician can confirm the plan.

Different Units: An 82-Kilogram Man Eating Swordfish, Checked Against Three Standards

A traveler who tracks his food in metric units eats one 150-gram swordfish steak per week. Swordfish averages 0.995 ppm, which equals 0.995 milligrams per kilogram. He weighs 82 kilograms and wants to compare the US, European, and international limits.

Mercury in the steak: 0.995 × 150 = 149.25 µg.
Weekly dose: 149.25 / 82 = 1.82 µg/kg/week.
EPA limit: 0.1 × 7 = 0.7 µg/kg/week, so 1.82 / 0.7 = 260 percent.
EFSA limit: 1.3 µg/kg/week, so 1.82 / 1.3 = 140 percent.
JECFA limit: 1.6 µg/kg/week, so 1.82 / 1.6 = 114 percent.

He exceeds all three standards, though by different amounts. Stricter US guidance lists swordfish among fish to avoid. He could meet the EPA figure by eating one such steak about every 2.6 weeks, but a lower-mercury fish makes more sense.

Fish Mercury Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

Your result is a percentage of the EPA reference dose. Below 50 percent, you're well within the safe range, and you can eat that fish often. Between 50 and 100 percent, you're inside the reference dose, and you should keep your choices steady. Above 100 percent, you're over the reference level, which carries a tenfold safety factor, so a modest overage isn't an emergency. Above 200 percent, you should change species or portions soon.

Mercury leaves the body slowly, with a half-life of roughly 50 days. That means your weekly average matters, not one meal. A single swordfish dinner followed by weeks of salmon is a very different pattern from swordfish every week.

The most common misunderstanding is thinking any mercury is too much, which leads people to drop fish entirely. FDA and EPA advise most adults to eat two to three servings of lower-mercury fish weekly, because fish supplies protein, vitamin D, and omega-3 fats. The goal is better choices, not zero fish.

If you're over 100 percent, switch to a species from the FDA "Best Choices" list before you cut portions. If you're pregnant or feeding a child, aim to stay under 100 percent consistently and talk to your clinician.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Fish species has the largest effect by far. The table shows what one 4-ounce serving per week does to a 68-kilogram adult.

Fish	Mercury (ppm)	Share of weekly reference dose
Shrimp	0.009	2%
Salmon	0.022	5%
Cod	0.111	26%
Canned light tuna	0.126	30%
Canned albacore tuna	0.350	83%
Swordfish	0.995	236%
Tilefish (Gulf of Mexico)	1.123	267%

Body weight changes the result in the opposite direction. The same canned albacore serving (39.55 µg) lands very differently depending on who eats it.

Body weight	Weekly allowance (µg)	Share of allowance from one albacore serving
15 kg (33 lb)	10.5	377%
30 kg (66 lb)	21.0	188%
59 kg (130 lb)	41.3	96%
68 kg (150 lb)	47.6	83%
90 kg (198 lb)	63.0	63%

Doubling body weight halves the dose, which explains why small children and pregnant women need extra attention. A child shouldn't eat an adult-size portion of a fish an adult can eat weekly.

Serving size is easy to overlook. A 4-ounce serving of swordfish gives 112.4 µg. A restaurant steak of 8 ounces (227 grams) gives about 226 µg, which is 475 percent of a 68-kilogram adult's weekly allowance in one meal. Always weigh or estimate the actual portion.

Frequency matters in a straight line. Two servings of canned light tuna take you from 30 to 60 percent, and four take you to 120 percent. When you eat several fish types, add their weekly totals together before comparing with the limit.

Fish Mercury Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mixing ounces and grams. One ounce equals 28.35 grams, and entering ounces in a grams field understates your dose by a factor of 28. Check the unit label before you press calculate.
Treating all tuna as one fish. Canned light tuna averages 0.126 ppm, while canned albacore averages 0.350 ppm and fresh bigeye runs near 0.689 ppm. Pick the exact product.
Forgetting that cooking concentrates mercury. Fish loses water as it cooks, so the mercury per cooked ounce is somewhat higher than the raw figure. Use raw weight when you can.
Ignoring body weight. A child or small adult gets a larger dose from the same meal. Always enter the eater's own weight, not a household average.
Skipping local fish advisories. The calculator uses national averages for commercial fish. Fish caught in local lakes and rivers can carry much more mercury, so check your state's advisory.
Comparing against the wrong standard. The EPA reference dose is 0.1 µg/kg/day, EFSA's weekly limit is 1.3 µg/kg, and JECFA's is 1.6. A result that passes one may fail another.
Using it for supplements or special populations alone. Fish oil capsules are typically low in mercury and aren't covered here. For pregnancy or a child's diet, treat the result as a starting point for a conversation with your clinician.

Key Terms Explained

Methylmercury

Methylmercury is the organic form of mercury that builds up in fish and passes into your body when you eat them.

Reference Dose (RfD)

The reference dose is the EPA's estimate of the daily methylmercury intake, 0.1 µg per kilogram of body weight, that's unlikely to cause harm over a lifetime.

Bioaccumulation

Bioaccumulation is the buildup of mercury in an animal's tissue over time, which is why large, long-lived predators carry the most.

Parts Per Million (ppm)

Parts per million expresses mercury concentration as micrograms of mercury per gram of fish.

Serving Size

A serving is the FDA's standard portion for advice on eating fish, which is 4 ounces before cooking for adults and smaller for children.

Best Choices, Good Choices, and Choices to Avoid

These are the FDA and EPA categories that group fish by mercury level and tell you how many servings per week are advisable.

Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake

The tolerable weekly intake is the international limit set by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee, 1.6 µg per kilogram of body weight per week for methylmercury.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This fish mercury calculator uses the EPA methylmercury reference dose of 0.1 µg/kg/day, published in the agency's 2001 Integrated Risk Information System assessment. Mercury concentrations come from FDA's Mercury Levels in Commercial Fish and Shellfish (1990–2012) table, and serving sizes follow the 2021 FDA and EPA Advice About Eating Fish. The calculation assumes your eating pattern is steady from week to week and that the fish match the national average mercury level. It excludes locally caught freshwater fish, because mercury varies widely by water body, and it excludes supplements. Doses round to three decimals, percentages to the nearest whole number, and servings per week to one decimal. Treat every result as an estimate, since individual fish vary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fish Mercury Calculator

1. What does a fish mercury calculator actually calculate?

A fish mercury calculator estimates how much methylmercury you take in from the fish you eat, based on species, portion size, servings per week, and body weight. It then compares that amount with the EPA reference dose and shows a percentage. It also suggests how many servings per week keep you under the limit.

2. How accurate is a fish mercury calculator?

It's accurate to within about 20 to 30 percent for typical commercial fish. The main uncertainty is that mercury levels vary from fish to fish, and published values are averages. Portion estimates add more error. Use the result as a planning tool, and rely on a clinician's blood test if you have real concern.

3. What is the fish mercury formula in simple terms?

Multiply the mercury level in the fish by your portion size and servings per week, divide by seven days and your body weight, then compare with 0.1 micrograms per kilogram per day. For example, two 113-gram servings of canned light tuna give a 68-kilogram adult 0.060 µg/kg/day, which is 60 percent of the reference dose.

4. Is the mercury limit different in Europe and the US?

Yes. The US EPA reference dose equals 0.7 µg/kg per week, EFSA in Europe sets 1.3 µg/kg per week, and the international JECFA limit is 1.6 µg/kg per week. Differences come from study choices and safety margins. The calculator lets you compare all three, and the US figure is the strictest.

5. When does a fish mercury calculator not apply?

It doesn't apply to fish you catch yourself in local lakes or rivers, where mercury varies widely and state advisories govern. It also doesn't cover other contaminants like PCBs, and it can't assess existing mercury poisoning. If you have symptoms or a high blood mercury test, you need a medical evaluation, not a calculator.

6. How can I get a more precise mercury estimate?

Weigh your portions on a kitchen scale instead of estimating, and use the exact product, such as canned albacore versus canned light tuna. Enter your real body weight, and add every fish meal you eat in a typical week. For local fish, use your state's advisory value. A blood or hair mercury test gives the most precise personal figure.

7. What is a typical fish mercury result for an American adult?

A typical adult who eats two servings of salmon, shrimp, or canned light tuna a week lands around 10 to 60 percent of the reference dose. Someone eating canned albacore weekly lands near 80 to 100 percent. Results above 100 percent usually come from regular swordfish, shark, king mackerel, or tilefish.

8. Should I see a doctor about mercury from fish?

Yes, if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning a pregnancy, or if you regularly eat high-mercury fish and have symptoms like numbness, tremors, or memory changes. Your clinician can order a blood test and advise on safe choices. For children, ask a pediatrician before setting a fish routine.
