Meloxicam, sold under the brand name Metacam, is one of the most commonly prescribed pain and anti-inflammatory medications for cats, but it also carries one of the narrowest safety margins of any drug used in feline medicine. A Metacam dosage calculator for cats helps you confirm the exact milligram amount your vet prescribed based on your cat's weight, so you can double-check the number before administering a single drop.

This isn't a supplement or an antibiotic with a wide margin for error. Meloxicam has a FDA black box warning for cats specifically, because repeated or excessive dosing has been linked to kidney failure and death. Getting the math right here matters more than with almost any other feline medication calculator on this site.

What Is a Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats and Why Does It Matter?

A Metacam dosage calculator for cats converts your cat's body weight into a precise milligram dose of meloxicam based on the rate your veterinarian prescribed, typically expressed in milligrams per kilogram. It exists because meloxicam dosing for cats is weight-critical and unforgiving, unlike many other medications with wider safety windows. Cat owners use this tool after a vet visit to confirm the dose on their prescription label, especially with oral suspension where volume measurement errors are common. The core method multiplies weight in kilograms by the prescribed dose rate. Getting this calculation wrong carries real consequences, since meloxicam overdose or prolonged use in cats is strongly associated with acute kidney injury and can be fatal.

What You Need Before You Start

Before using this calculator, gather the following information directly from your cat's prescription and recent vet visit.

Know your cat's current, accurate weight in pounds or kilograms, ideally measured at the clinic.
Have the exact dose rate your veterinarian prescribed, usually written in milligrams per kilogram.
Confirm the concentration of your specific Metacam product, since oral suspension commonly comes in 0.5 mg/mL for cats.
Know whether this is a single post-surgical dose or an ongoing maintenance dose, since the two differ significantly.
Check whether your cat has any known kidney disease, liver disease, or dehydration, since these are major risk factors.
Confirm your cat is not currently taking another NSAID or corticosteroid, since combining these drugs is dangerous.

How to Use This Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats — Step by Step

This calculator turns your cat's weight and prescribed dose rate into a specific milligram and milliliter amount.

Enter your cat's weight, choosing pounds or kilograms depending on your vet record.
Enter the exact dose rate your veterinarian prescribed, typically 0.05 mg/kg for maintenance oral dosing.
Confirm the concentration of your oral suspension, most commonly 0.5 mg/mL for the feline formulation.
Review the calculated total milligram dose shown on screen.
Review the corresponding milliliter volume based on your product's concentration.
Compare both numbers against your prescription label before administering the first dose.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if the calculated numbers don't match what's printed on your prescription.

The Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats Formula — Explained Simply

Meloxicam dosing for cats works on a weight-based principle, but with a critical twist compared to most other drugs: cats generally require a lower initial dose followed by an even lower maintenance dose, unlike dogs or humans who often stay on a flat ongoing rate. The calculator multiplies body weight by the prescribed dose rate, then converts the result into a liquid volume.

Dose (mg) = Weight (kg) x Dose Rate (mg/kg)

Weight (kg): Your cat's body weight in kilograms, typically 2.5 kg to 8 kg for adult domestic cats.
Dose Rate (mg/kg): The prescribed rate, commonly 0.05 mg/kg for the first maintenance dose and often reduced to 0.025 mg/kg for doses beyond that.
Dose (mg): The total milligrams of meloxicam per administration.
Volume (mL): The calculated dose divided by product concentration, usually 0.5 mg/mL for the feline oral suspension.

This tiered dosing approach exists because cats metabolize meloxicam more slowly than dogs, so a dose that's safe once can accumulate to dangerous levels with repeated daily use. This dosing structure reflects guidance published in the FDA-approved Metacam label for cats, which carries a boxed warning specifically addressing the risk of repeated dosing in this species.

Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats — Worked Examples

Beginner Scenario: A Single Post-Surgical Dose

Kelly's cat, Oreo, weighs 4.2 kilograms and just had a dental extraction. Her vet prescribed a single injectable dose of 0.3 mg/kg to manage post-operative pain, given once at the clinic and not repeated at home.

Multiply weight by dose rate: 4.2 kg x 0.3 mg/kg.
Calculate the total: 4.2 x 0.3 = 1.26 mg for the single injectable dose.

This 1.26 mg dose is administered once by the veterinary team, not repeated by Kelly at home, since single-dose injectable meloxicam for post-surgical pain follows different rules than ongoing oral maintenance dosing. Kelly should ask her vet directly before giving any additional meloxicam at home, since this single-use dose is meaningfully higher than a typical maintenance rate.

Professional Scenario: A Veterinary Clinic Calculating an Initial Oral Loading Dose

Dr. Nguyen is starting a 5.5 kilogram cat with confirmed osteoarthritis on oral meloxicam, prescribing a first-day loading dose of 0.1 mg/kg using an oral suspension concentrated at 0.5 mg/mL.

Multiply weight by dose rate: 5.5 kg x 0.1 mg/kg.
Calculate the milligram dose: 5.5 x 0.1 = 0.55 mg for the first day.
Convert to volume: 0.55 mg divided by 0.5 mg/mL.
Calculate the liquid volume: 0.55 / 0.5 = 1.1 mL for the loading dose.

Dr. Nguyen would draw up 1.1 mL for this cat's first day only, then reduce to the lower maintenance rate on all following days, which is standard practice for oral meloxicam in cats. This step-down pattern, higher on day one and lower afterward, is a defining feature of feline meloxicam dosing that doesn't apply the same way to most other medications.

Edge Case: A Cat With Early Kidney Disease Requiring Extreme Caution

Frank's cat, Duchess, weighs 3.8 kilograms and has been diagnosed with early-stage chronic kidney disease. Frank's vet is considering whether meloxicam is even appropriate, and if used at all, wants to calculate the lowest possible effective maintenance rate of 0.025 mg/kg.

Multiply weight by dose rate: 3.8 kg x 0.025 mg/kg.
Calculate the total: 3.8 x 0.025 = 0.095 mg per dose.
Convert to volume using 0.5 mg/mL concentration: 0.095 / 0.5 = 0.19 mL per dose.

This is an edge case precisely because the math produces a technically valid but very small, hard-to-measure volume, and more importantly, because meloxicam use in a cat with kidney disease carries elevated risk regardless of how carefully the dose is calculated. Frank's vet may decide against meloxicam entirely in favor of a different pain management approach, and this calculation should be treated as informational only until that clinical decision is made.

Regional Variant: A Canadian Cat Owner Using a Metric Prescription

Sophie, based in Calgary, has a 6 kilogram cat prescribed meloxicam at a maintenance rate of 0.05 mg/kg using a Canadian-labeled oral suspension also concentrated at 0.5 mg/mL, consistent with standard formulations sold across North America.

Multiply weight by dose rate: 6 kg x 0.05 mg/kg.
Calculate the total: 6 x 0.05 = 0.3 mg per dose.
Convert to volume: 0.3 / 0.5 = 0.6 mL per dose.

Sophie's cat needs 0.6 mL per dose using the standard feline concentration, a calculation that stays identical whether the prescription originates in Canada or the United States, since both countries use the same metric-based feline meloxicam concentration. She should still confirm the exact product concentration on her specific bottle, since compounded or off-label formulations can differ.

Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats Results — What the Numbers Mean

Most maintenance oral doses for cats fall in a narrow range, typically between 0.1 mg and 0.4 mg total per dose depending on body weight, using the standard 0.025 to 0.05 mg/kg maintenance rates. A calculated dose noticeably above this range, especially anything approaching or exceeding 0.3 mg/kg on an ongoing basis, should raise an immediate red flag and prompt a call to your vet before administering.

The most common misunderstanding is assuming that because a higher single dose was safe once, for example after surgery, that same rate is safe for repeated daily use. Meloxicam's safety margin in cats depends heavily on whether it's a one-time dose or a chronic regimen, and the FDA label explicitly warns that repeated use carries meaningfully higher risk than a single administration.

What you should do differs based on where your calculated dose falls relative to your prescription. If your calculation matches the label, proceed as directed by your vet while watching for reduced appetite, vomiting, or changes in water intake or urination, all of which can signal kidney stress. If your calculation is even slightly higher than what's printed on the label, stop and call your vet before giving that dose, since meloxicam does not have the same forgiving margin as many other feline medications on this site.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Weight drives the dose directly, and accuracy matters more here than with almost any other feline medication. A half-kilogram error in a cat's recorded weight can shift a maintenance dose enough to matter, given how narrow the therapeutic window already is for this drug.

Dose rate changes dramatically depending on whether you're calculating a single post-surgical injectable dose or an ongoing oral maintenance dose. The difference between a 0.3 mg/kg one-time dose and a 0.05 mg/kg maintenance dose is sixfold, and confusing these two numbers is one of the most serious errors an owner can make with this drug.

Concentration of the product determines the final liquid volume, and this becomes especially important with meloxicam because the feline-specific formulation, at 0.5 mg/mL, is far less concentrated than the canine version, at 1.5 mg/mL. Using a dog's meloxicam concentration to calculate a cat's dose can result in a threefold overdose.

The table below shows how the maintenance dose shifts across common cat weights at the standard 0.05 mg/kg rate, using the 0.5 mg/mL feline concentration.

Weight (kg) | Weight (lbs) | Dose (mg) at 0.05 mg/kg | Volume (mL) 2.5 | 5.5 | 0.125 mg | 0.25 mL 4.0 | 8.8 | 0.20 mg | 0.40 mL 5.5 | 12.1 | 0.275 mg | 0.55 mL 7.0 | 15.4 | 0.35 mg | 0.70 mL

This table shows just how small these numbers are compared to most other medications, which is exactly why an accurate oral dosing syringe, not a household spoon, matters so much with this drug.

Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the dog concentration of meloxicam for a cat is a serious and potentially fatal error, since canine oral suspension is typically three times more concentrated than the feline version.
Continuing a post-surgical loading dose rate long-term instead of stepping down to the lower maintenance rate significantly increases the risk of kidney injury over time.
Giving meloxicam to a dehydrated cat raises toxicity risk substantially, since adequate hydration is necessary for the kidneys to safely process this drug.
Combining meloxicam with another NSAID or a corticosteroid without vet guidance can cause serious gastrointestinal and kidney complications, since these drug classes shouldn't overlap.
Measuring liquid doses with a kitchen spoon instead of the provided oral syringe leads to significant volume errors, given how small feline meloxicam doses typically are.
Assuming a cat tolerating meloxicam well means the dose can be increased ignores the drug's narrow safety margin, and any dose adjustment should only come from a veterinarian.
Skipping recommended bloodwork monitoring during long-term meloxicam use misses early signs of kidney stress that wouldn't be obvious from behavior alone.
Using leftover meloxicam from a previous prescription or a different cat without a current vet evaluation ignores that dosing depends on current weight, kidney function, and the specific reason for treatment.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies dosing guidance from the FDA-approved Metacam label for cats, which specifies a loading dose and a reduced maintenance rate due to the drug's narrow safety margin in this species. It multiplies the cat's weight in kilograms by the prescribed milligram-per-kilogram rate entered by the user, then converts the result into a liquid volume based on the standard 0.5 mg/mL feline concentration. The calculation assumes normal kidney and liver function and adequate hydration, since these factors significantly affect how safely a cat processes this drug. It does not account for drug interactions, compounded formulation differences, or bloodwork-based dose adjustments a veterinarian might make. Results are rounded to two decimal places for milligrams and milliliters, reflecting standard oral syringe precision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Metacam Dosage Calculator For Cats

1. What does a Metacam dosage calculator for cats actually calculate?

It calculates the milligram amount of meloxicam your cat needs per dose by multiplying body weight in kilograms by the prescribed dose rate. It also converts that milligram amount into a milliliter volume based on the feline oral suspension's standard 0.5 mg/mL concentration.

2. How accurate is the calculated Metacam dose?

It's mathematically accurate based on the weight and rate you enter, but meloxicam's narrow safety margin means even small input errors matter more than with most medications. Always verify the calculated number against your actual prescription label before administering.

3. What is the Metacam dosing formula in simple terms?

You multiply your cat's weight in kilograms by the prescribed milligrams-per-kilogram rate to get the milligram dose. That number is then divided by the product's concentration, usually 0.5 mg/mL, to find the correct liquid volume to draw up.

4. Does Metacam dosing differ between cats and dogs?

Yes, significantly. The feline oral suspension is formulated at a lower concentration, typically 0.5 mg/mL compared to 1.5 mg/mL for dogs, and cats require lower ongoing maintenance rates due to slower drug metabolism and higher sensitivity to kidney-related side effects.

5. When should I not use this calculator's result?

Don't use it if your cat has kidney disease, is dehydrated, or is taking another NSAID or corticosteroid, since these situations require direct veterinary judgment rather than a standard weight-based calculation. Always treat the calculator as a verification tool, not a substitute for your vet's specific instructions.

6. How can I get a more precise Metacam dose for my cat?

Confirm your cat's exact current weight at the vet clinic rather than estimating at home, since even small weight differences matter given this drug's narrow safety margin. Use the oral syringe provided with your prescription rather than any household measuring tool.

7. What is a typical Metacam maintenance dose for an average cat?

For an average 4 to 5 kilogram cat on the standard 0.05 mg/kg maintenance rate, a typical dose falls between 0.2 and 0.25 milligrams, equal to about 0.4 to 0.5 milliliters of the feline oral suspension.

8. Should I consult a veterinarian before giving my cat Metacam?

Yes, always, without exception. Meloxicam carries a specific FDA warning for cats regarding repeated dosing risk, and only a veterinarian can determine whether it's appropriate for your cat, confirm the correct dose, and monitor kidney function during treatment.
