A solar panel wattage calculator tells you how many watts of solar panels your home needs. You enter your electricity use, your location's peak sun hours, and the panel wattage you plan to buy. The tool returns system size in kilowatts and the number of panels to install. For a homeowner comparing quotes, that number is the first thing worth checking.

The average US home uses about 10,500 kWh a year, and installers price solar by the watt. A system sized too small leaves you paying the utility. A system sized too large costs you money for power you can't use. This guide explains how a solar panel wattage calculator works, walks through four real scenarios, and covers the mistakes that lead to bad quotes.

What Is a Solar Panel Wattage Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A solar panel wattage calculator works out the total panel capacity needed to cover your electricity use. It divides your daily energy need by the sun hours your roof receives and by the share of power that survives system losses. In plain English, it asks how many watts of panels you need to harvest your daily kilowatt-hours.

Homeowners use it to check installer quotes. Installers use it to draft designs. Getting it wrong has a real price tag. A 1 kW error at typical rates of $3 per watt means a $3,000 mistake, up or down.

What You Need Before You Start

Collect these numbers first. Your utility bill holds most of them.

Your annual electricity use in kWh, taken from 12 months of bills.
Your average peak sun hours per day, which depend on your city and roof angle.
The wattage rating of the panel you plan to buy, such as 400 W.
Your system loss factor or derate, usually 0.80 to 0.90.
Your offset goal, the percentage of your bill you want solar to cover.
Any shading from trees, chimneys, or neighboring buildings.
Your available roof area, so the panel count actually fits.

How to Use This Solar Panel Wattage Calculator — Step by Step

Follow these steps in order, and use annual figures where possible.

Add up 12 months of kWh from your utility bills.
Divide that total by 365 to get daily kWh.
Look up your annual average peak sun hours for your location.
Enter a derate of 0.86, and lower it if your roof has shade or a poor angle.
Pick a panel wattage from the spec sheet of the panel you're considering.
Set your offset goal, such as 100 percent.
Calculate, then round the panel count up and check it against your roof space.

The Solar Panel Wattage Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

The idea is simple. Each kilowatt of panels produces a predictable amount of energy per day, based on sun hours and system losses. You divide your daily need by that per-kilowatt output to find the size you need.

The formulas are:

System Size (kW) = Daily kWh ÷ (Peak Sun Hours × Derate)

Number of Panels = (System Size in kW × 1,000) ÷ Panel Wattage, rounded up

Daily kWh: your average daily electricity use. The US average is about 29, and most homes fall between 15 and 60.
Peak Sun Hours: hours per day of sunlight at 1,000 W/m². Range runs from about 3.0 in cloudy regions to 6.5 in the desert Southwest.
Derate: the share of rated power that reaches your outlets after losses. Range runs from 0.75 to 0.90.
Panel Wattage: the DC rating of one panel under standard test conditions. Modern residential panels run from 350 to 450 W.
System Size: total DC capacity in kilowatts. Typical US homes need 5 to 10 kW.

The formula works because peak sun hours compress a day's sunshine into the hours when panels produce their full rated watts. Multiplying by derate then removes losses from heat, wiring, dirt, and the inverter. This approach follows the logic of NREL's PVWatts calculator, and the rating basis comes from standard test conditions of 1,000 W/m² and 25°C cell temperature, defined in IEC 61215 and related standards. The sizing equation itself is a widely accepted industry formula taught in texts such as Masters' Renewable and Efficient Electric Power Systems.

Solar Panel Wattage Calculator — Worked Examples

Beginner: Average Home in Atlanta, Georgia

A homeowner in Atlanta uses 10,500 kWh a year and wants to cover 100 percent of it. Atlanta gets about 4.6 peak sun hours, the derate is 0.86, and she's shopping for 400 W panels. She pays $0.16 per kWh.

Find daily use: 10,500 ÷ 365 = 28.77 kWh.
Find daily output per kW: 4.6 × 0.86 = 3.956 kWh.
Find system size: 28.77 ÷ 3.956 = 7.27 kW.
Convert to watts: 7.27 × 1,000 = 7,270 W.
Find panels: 7,270 ÷ 400 = 18.2, rounded up to 19.
Find installed size: 19 × 400 = 7,600 W.
Check production: 7.6 × 3.956 × 365 = 10,975 kWh, or 105 percent of use.

That output saves about $1,756 a year at her rate. She should confirm 19 panels fit her roof before collecting quotes.

Professional: Phoenix Home With an Electric Vehicle

An installer in Phoenix designs for a family using 14,400 kWh a year. They'll add an EV that drives 11,000 miles a year at 0.30 kWh per mile. Phoenix gets about 6.5 peak sun hours, derate is 0.86, and the chosen panel is 430 W.

Find EV use: 11,000 × 0.30 = 3,300 kWh.
Find total use: 14,400 + 3,300 = 17,700 kWh.
Find daily use: 17,700 ÷ 365 = 48.49 kWh.
Find output per kW: 6.5 × 0.86 = 5.59 kWh.
Find system size: 48.49 ÷ 5.59 = 8.67 kW.
Find panels: 8,670 ÷ 430 = 20.2, rounded up to 21.
Check installed size and output: 21 × 430 = 9.03 kW, and 9.03 × 5.59 × 365 = 18,424 kWh, or 104 percent.

Without the EV, the same home needs only 17 panels. Planning for the car now saves a costly expansion later.

Edge Case: Shaded Seattle Roof With Limited Space

A homeowner in Seattle uses 9,000 kWh a year. Seattle gets about 3.6 peak sun hours. A tree shades the roof and adds a 15 percent loss, so the derate falls to 0.86 × 0.85 = 0.731. The roof fits only 14 panels.

Find daily use: 9,000 ÷ 365 = 24.66 kWh.
Find output per kW: 3.6 × 0.731 = 2.632 kWh.
Find system size: 24.66 ÷ 2.632 = 9.37 kW.
Find panels at 400 W: 9,370 ÷ 400 = 23.4, rounded up to 24.
Check the roof limit: 14 × 400 = 5.6 kW, producing 5.6 × 2.632 × 365 = 5,380 kWh, or 60 percent.
Try 440 W panels: 14 × 440 = 6.16 kW, producing 6.16 × 2.632 × 365 = 5,918 kWh, or 66 percent.

The roof can't reach full offset. Higher-wattage panels recover six points, and trimming the tree would recover more. He should price tree work against the extra panels.

Regional Variant: Hawaii Home Sizing From a Dollar Bill

A homeowner in Honolulu knows only that her bill runs $240 a month at $0.42 per kWh. She gets about 5.5 peak sun hours, derate is 0.86, and panels are 400 W.

Convert the bill to kWh: $240 ÷ $0.42 = 571 kWh per month.
Find annual use: 571.4 × 12 = 6,857 kWh.
Find daily use: 6,857 ÷ 365 = 18.79 kWh.
Find output per kW: 5.5 × 0.86 = 4.73 kWh.
Find system size: 18.79 ÷ 4.73 = 3.97 kW.
Find panels: 3,970 ÷ 400 = 9.9, rounded up to 10.
Check production: 4.0 × 4.73 × 365 = 6,906 kWh, worth $2,901 at her rate.

High electricity prices make a small system pay back quickly. She should check her utility's current export and billing rules, since they differ by state and change often.

Solar Panel Wattage Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

Your result lands on a familiar scale. Under 3 kW is a small system for a low-use home, an apartment, or a cabin. Most US homes land between 5 and 10 kW. Above 10 kW points to heavy use, such as an EV, electric heat, a pool, or a large house.

A low result is good news. It means your use is modest or your sun is strong, and you'll need fewer panels. A high result isn't a problem either, but it deserves a second look at both your usage and your roof space. Many large estimates shrink after an energy audit.

The most common misunderstanding is mixing up panel wattage and system size. A 400 W panel doesn't produce 400 W all day, and 10 of them don't produce 4,000 W. Rated watts apply under lab conditions, so real output follows the sun and your losses.

A second trap is the rounding. Always round panel count up, never down, because a fraction of a panel still leaves a gap. If your result needs more panels than your roof holds, switch to higher-wattage panels before you cut your goal. Treat 100 percent offset as a starting point, not a requirement. Many homeowners size to 80 or 90 percent, since the last stretch of coverage costs the most per kWh.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Peak sun hours shift the result more than most people expect. Using a 10,500 kWh home with a 0.86 derate and 400 W panels, here's how location changes the answer.

Peak Sun Hours	System Size (kW)	Panels at 400 W
3.5	9.56	24
4.0	8.36	21
4.6	7.27	19
5.5	6.08	16
6.5	5.15	13

The same house needs 11 more panels in a cloudy city than in the desert. That gap can swing the total cost by thousands of dollars.

Derate reflects losses from heat, wiring, soiling, shade, and the inverter. The same home at 4.6 peak sun hours needs different capacity depending on that single number.

Derate	System Size (kW)
0.75	8.34
0.80	7.82
0.86	7.27
0.90	6.95

A shaded or poorly angled roof can drop derate to 0.75. That costs more than 1 kW of extra panels.

Panel wattage doesn't change the system size, but it changes how many panels you carry. For the 7.27 kW system above, the counts look like this.

Panel Wattage	Panels Needed
300 W	25
350 W	21
400 W	19
450 W	17
550 W	14

Higher-wattage panels help when roof space is tight. They cost more per panel, so compare price per watt, not price per panel.

Annual usage is the input you control most. Adding an EV that uses 3,300 kWh raises the base home from 10,500 to 13,800 kWh. Daily use jumps from 28.77 to 37.81 kWh, and the system grows from 7.27 to 9.56 kW, or 24 panels. Cutting 15 percent through efficiency upgrades drops use to 8,925 kWh and the system to 6.18 kW, or 16 panels. Reducing use before you buy solar is often the cheapest watt you'll ever save.

Solar Panel Wattage Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using one month of data. Summer air conditioning and winter heating swing usage widely. Use a full 12 months, or your system will miss the mark.
Confusing peak sun hours with daylight hours. A city with 14 hours of daylight in June may have only 5 peak sun hours. Use the annual average peak sun figure for your location.
Skipping the derate. Ignoring losses assumes panels deliver their rated watts all day. That understates system size by 14 percent or more.
Rounding panels down. Rounding 18.2 down to 18 leaves you short of your target. Round up, then check roof space.
Mixing DC and AC ratings. Panel watts and system size are DC, while the inverter's rating is AC. Quotes that blur the two can hide a smaller system.
Ignoring local rules and incentives. Net metering, export credits, and tax incentives differ by state and utility, and they've changed recently. Verify current terms before you rely on a savings figure.
Using it where it doesn't apply. The calculator doesn't suit off-grid systems that need battery sizing, heavily shaded roofs, or homes planning large load changes. Those cases need a detailed design.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator applies the standard solar sizing equation: System Size equals daily kWh divided by peak sun hours times derate. It follows the logic of NREL's PVWatts calculator and its documented system loss model, and it uses a default derate of 0.86, based on PVWatts' typical loss of about 14 percent.

The tool assumes a fixed derate, a clear annual average of peak sun hours, and panels rated under IEC 61215 test conditions. It treats production as constant across the year.

It excludes month-by-month variation, battery storage, panel degradation (typically 0.5 percent per year), time-of-use rates, and detailed shading analysis. Those need hourly modeling or a site survey. System size rounds to two decimal places, panel counts round up to the next whole panel, and annual production rounds to the nearest kilowatt-hour.

Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Panel Wattage Calculator

1. What does a solar panel wattage calculator actually calculate?

It calculates the total solar capacity, in kilowatts, needed to cover your electricity use. It then converts that capacity into a panel count based on the wattage you choose. You supply your annual usage, sun hours, and losses. The result shows how many panels you need and how much they'll produce.

2. How accurate is a solar panel wattage calculator?

A good calculator lands within about 10 to 15 percent of real production when your inputs are correct. Accuracy depends mostly on your usage figure and your location's sun data. Shading, roof tilt, and equipment quality add uncertainty. A site-specific model like PVWatts, or an installer survey, narrows the gap further.

3. What is the formula for solar panel wattage in simple terms?

Divide your daily kilowatt-hours by peak sun hours times the derate factor. That gives system size in kilowatts. Then multiply by 1,000 and divide by your panel's wattage to get the panel count. The derate removes losses from heat, wiring, and the inverter, so the number reflects real-world output.

4. Is panel wattage the same as the power my system produces?

No. Panel wattage is a lab rating under ideal conditions, while real output is lower because of heat, dust, angle, and wiring losses. A 400 W panel usually produces about 340 W at peak in real use. Energy production also depends on sun hours, which is why the calculator includes a derate factor.

5. When doesn't a solar panel wattage calculator work?

It doesn't work well for off-grid systems that need battery sizing, for roofs with heavy shade, or for homes about to make large changes in electricity use. It also misses time-of-use rates and net metering limits. For those cases, get a professional design and a shading analysis before you buy.

6. How can I get a more accurate solar panel estimate?

Use 12 months of utility data instead of a single bill. Look up peak sun hours for your exact location with NREL's PVWatts tool. Adjust derate for shading, roof tilt, and orientation. Then ask an installer for a shade analysis, which measures real losses at your address.

7. How many solar panels does an average house need?

An average US home using about 10,500 kWh a year needs roughly 15 to 25 panels of 400 W, depending on location. That's a system of 6 to 10 kW. Homes in sunny states like Arizona need fewer panels, while homes in cloudy regions need more. Use your own usage and sun hours for a real number.

8. Do I need a professional to size my solar system?

You should consult one before you buy. A professional measures your roof, checks shading, reviews your panel and inverter options, and confirms electrical code compliance, including NEC Article 690. They also verify local permitting and utility interconnection rules. A calculator gives you a strong starting estimate, but a site visit protects your investment.
