FeCl2 and FeCl3 look almost identical on paper, but they're genuinely different compounds, iron(II) chloride and iron(III) chloride, and the only thing distinguishing their names is a Roman numeral most people forget to check. Chemical naming isn't arbitrary; it follows a strict, logical rule set that tells you exactly what a formula means just from reading its name, and vice versa. The Chemical Name Calculator converts between chemical formulas and their correct systematic names using the same rules chemists use worldwide.

This article covers the naming rules for ionic compounds, molecular compounds, and transition metal compounds, four worked examples spanning a simple binary ionic compound, a transition metal requiring a Roman numeral, a molecular compound using Greek prefixes, and a polyatomic ion case, plus the mistakes that lead people to misname compounds. Every naming rule here reflects standard IUPAC and Stock system nomenclature, not a simplified shortcut.

What Is a Chemical Name Calculator and Why Does It Matter

A chemical name calculator converts a chemical formula into its correct systematic name, or a compound name back into its formula, following standardized nomenclature rules. It solves a real problem: the same two elements can combine in different ratios to form entirely different compounds, like CO and CO2, and a formula alone doesn't tell a reader anything until it's translated into a name that specifies exactly what's present. In plain terms, the method identifies whether a compound is ionic or molecular, then applies the specific naming rule set for that category, including Roman numerals for variable-charge metals or Greek prefixes for molecular compounds. Misnaming a compound, especially omitting a required Roman numeral or prefix, can mean creating genuine ambiguity about which actual substance is being described.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these details before naming a compound, since the correct rule set depends on what type of compound you're working with.

- The chemical formula you want to name, or the compound name you want to convert back to a formula.

- Whether the compound is ionic (typically a metal combined with a nonmetal) or molecular/covalent (typically two or more nonmetals).

- If the compound contains a metal, whether that metal has a fixed charge (like sodium or calcium) or a variable charge (like iron or copper), since variable-charge metals require a Roman numeral.

- Whether the compound contains a polyatomic ion, like sulfate or nitrate, which has its own specific name and charge rather than being built from single elements.

- If naming a molecular compound, the exact number of atoms of each element, since this directly determines which Greek prefix applies.

- Whether the compound is an acid, since acids follow a distinct naming pattern separate from standard ionic or molecular rules.

How to Use This Chemical Name Calculator Step by Step

Naming a compound correctly takes identifying its type first, then applying the matching rule set.

1. Enter the chemical formula you want to name.

2. Identify whether the compound is ionic (metal plus nonmetal) or molecular (nonmetal plus nonmetal).

3. For ionic compounds, check whether the metal has a variable charge requiring a Roman numeral.

4. For molecular compounds, apply the appropriate Greek prefix to each element based on its subscript.

5. Check whether either element is part of a known polyatomic ion, which uses its own established name.

6. Review the calculated systematic name.

7. Verify by converting the generated name back to a formula and confirming it matches your original input.

The Chemical Name Calculator Formula Explained Simply

Chemical naming isn't a mathematical formula in the traditional sense; it's a structured decision tree that applies different rule sets depending on compound type. These rules are standardized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and, for transition metals specifically, follow what's called the Stock system, developed by German chemist Alfred Stock.

Binary ionic compound (fixed-charge metal): [Metal name] + [Nonmetal root]-ide

Binary ionic compound (variable-charge metal): [Metal name](Roman numeral for charge) + [Nonmetal root]-ide

Molecular (covalent) compound: [Greek prefix][Element 1] + [Greek prefix][Element 2 root]-ide (prefix "mono-" omitted on the first element only)

Compound with a polyatomic ion: [Cation name] + [Polyatomic ion name], using the ion's own established name rather than an -ide ending

- Metal name: the cation, written first and unchanged from its elemental name (except for the Roman numeral, if required).

- Nonmetal root + -ide: the anion, written second, using the nonmetal's root name with the ending changed to "-ide" (chlorine becomes chloride, oxygen becomes oxide).

- Roman numeral: required only for metals capable of forming more than one charge, most commonly transition metals, indicating that specific metal's charge in this particular compound.

- Greek prefixes: mono- (1), di- (2), tri- (3), tetra- (4), penta- (5), hexa- (6), hepta- (7), octa- (8), nona- (9), deca- (10), used for molecular compounds to specify exact atom counts.

The intuition behind the difference between ionic and molecular naming is that ionic compounds' formulas are fully determined by charge balance alone, meaning the ratio of cation to anion is fixed once you know their charges, so no prefix is needed since the name plus the known charges is enough information to reconstruct the formula. Molecular compounds, by contrast, can combine the same two elements in several different ratios (like CO and CO2), so prefixes are required to specify exactly which ratio is meant, since charge balance doesn't apply the same way to covalently bonded nonmetals.

Chemical Name Calculator Worked Examples

Example1.Beginner — A Simple Binary Ionic Compound With a Fixed-Charge Metal

Name the compound with the formula K2O, formed from potassium (a fixed-charge metal) and oxygen.

1. Identify the compound type: potassium is a metal, oxygen is a nonmetal, so this is an ionic compound.

2. Check the metal's charge behavior: potassium, a group 1 alkali metal, always forms a 1+ charge, so no Roman numeral is needed.

3. Name the cation: potassium, unchanged from its elemental name.

4. Name the anion: oxygen's root, "ox-," plus the "-ide" ending, giving "oxide."

5. Combine: potassium oxide.

The name "potassium oxide" fully and unambiguously describes K2O, since potassium's fixed 1+ charge and oxygen's standard 2- charge together determine the 2:1 ratio without needing any prefix or Roman numeral; the "2" in the formula is inferred entirely from charge balance, not stated explicitly in the name.

Example2.Professional — A Chemistry Teacher Explaining Why Iron Compounds Need a Roman Numeral

A chemistry teacher is showing students why FeCl2 and FeCl3, two genuinely different compounds, need different names despite looking similar.

1. Identify the compound type: iron is a metal, chlorine is a nonmetal, so both are ionic compounds.

2. Determine iron's charge in FeCl2: chlorine has a fixed 1- charge, and there are 2 chlorine atoms, so the total negative charge is 2-; for the compound to be neutral, iron must be 2+.

3. Determine iron's charge in FeCl3: with 3 chlorine atoms at 1- each, the total negative charge is 3-, so iron must be 3+.

4. Name FeCl2: iron(II) chloride, using the Roman numeral II to indicate the 2+ charge.

5. Name FeCl3: iron(III) chloride, using the Roman numeral III to indicate the 3+ charge.

The teacher emphasizes that simply calling both compounds "iron chloride" would be genuinely ambiguous, since that name could refer to either formula; the Roman numeral isn't optional decoration, it's the only piece of information in the name that distinguishes two chemically distinct substances with different properties, reflecting iron's real ability to exist as either Fe2+ or Fe3+ in different compounds.

Example3.Edge Case — A Molecular Compound Requiring Greek Prefixes on Both Elements

Name the compound N2O4, made of two nonmetals in a specific ratio that differs from other nitrogen-oxygen compounds like NO or N2O.

1. Identify the compound type: nitrogen and oxygen are both nonmetals, so this is a molecular (covalent) compound requiring Greek prefixes.

2. Apply the prefix to the first element: 2 nitrogen atoms requires the prefix "di-," giving "dinitrogen." Note that "mono-" is only omitted for the first element in a name when there's exactly one atom; since there are 2 nitrogen atoms here, "di-" is used and stated.

3. Apply the prefix to the second element: 4 oxygen atoms requires the prefix "tetra-," combined with the "-ide" root, giving "tetroxide" (the "a" in "tetra-" is dropped before a vowel, a standard elision rule).

4. Combine: dinitrogen tetroxide.

This example shows why prefixes matter critically for molecular compounds in a way they don't for ionic ones: NO is nitrogen monoxide, N2O is dinitrogen monoxide (commonly known as "laughing gas"), NO2 is nitrogen dioxide, and N2O4 is dinitrogen tetroxide, four genuinely different compounds that would all collapse into the meaningless, ambiguous name "nitrogen oxide" without their distinguishing prefixes.

Example4.Regional Variant — Naming a Compound That Contains a Polyatomic Ion

Name the compound Ca(NO3)2, formed from calcium and the polyatomic nitrate ion.

1. Identify the components: calcium is a fixed-charge metal (always 2+), and NO3 is the polyatomic nitrate ion, which carries its own established charge of 1-.

2. Recognize that polyatomic ions are named using their own specific, memorized name rather than being broken down and renamed using the standard -ide ending rule; nitrate is nitrate, not "nitrogen trioxide-ide" or any constructed alternative.

3. Determine the ratio: since calcium is 2+ and nitrate is 1-, two nitrate ions are needed to balance one calcium ion, which is exactly why the formula shows (NO3)2 with parentheses around the polyatomic ion.

4. Combine: calcium nitrate.

This example illustrates why polyatomic ions represent a genuine exception to the standard -ide naming pattern: nitrate, sulfate, phosphate, carbonate, and dozens of other common polyatomic ions each have their own established name that must simply be known or looked up, rather than derived from a general rule the way simple binary ionic and molecular compound names can be.

Chemical Name Calculator Results What the Numbers Mean

A correctly generated name that includes a Roman numeral exactly when the metal has variable charge, and omits it exactly when the metal has fixed charge, confirms the naming logic was applied correctly, as shown by contrasting the beginner example (fixed-charge potassium, no Roman numeral) against the professional example (variable-charge iron, Roman numeral required). A correctly generated molecular compound name that includes Greek prefixes on both elements, with "mono-" appearing only when genuinely needed on a second element and never redundantly on a first element with just one atom, confirms the prefix rules were applied correctly, as shown in the edge case example.

The most common misunderstanding is treating Roman numerals as decorative or optional rather than functionally necessary information, exactly the point the professional example demonstrates: "iron chloride" alone is genuinely ambiguous between two real, different compounds, and omitting the Roman numeral isn't a stylistic simplification, it's a loss of essential information. A second common misunderstanding is assuming ionic naming rules (charge-balance-determined ratios, no prefixes) and molecular naming rules (explicit prefixes required) are interchangeable; as shown by contrasting the beginner and edge case examples, these are fundamentally different systems applied to fundamentally different bonding types.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Whether the compound is ionic or molecular determines which entire rule set applies, the single most consequential input to the naming process, since ionic compounds never use Greek prefixes while molecular compounds always require them (except omitting "mono-" on a first-position single atom).

Whether a metal has fixed or variable charge determines whether a Roman numeral is required, as shown starkly by contrasting the beginner example (potassium, no Roman numeral needed) against the professional example (iron, Roman numeral required); this isn't determined by the compound itself but by which specific metal is involved, since some metals like iron, copper, and tin commonly form multiple charges while others like sodium and calcium do not.

The specific atom count in a molecular compound directly determines which Greek prefix applies to each element, and even a single-atom difference changes the entire compound's identity and name, as shown by the edge case example's comparison of NO, N2O, NO2, and N2O4, four distinct compounds from the same two elements.

The presence of a polyatomic ion changes the naming approach entirely for that portion of the compound, replacing the standard root-plus- "-ide" pattern with the polyatomic ion's own established name, as shown in the regional variant example with nitrate.

Compound formula | Type | Correct name

NaCl | Ionic, fixed-charge metal | Sodium chloride

CuO | Ionic, variable-charge metal | Copper(II) oxide

CO2 | Molecular | Carbon dioxide

Mg(OH)2 | Ionic with polyatomic ion | Magnesium hydroxide

Chemical Name Calculator Common Mistakes to Avoid

- Omitting the Roman numeral for a variable-charge metal. As shown in the professional example, this creates genuine ambiguity between chemically distinct compounds like FeCl2 and FeCl3.

- Adding a Roman numeral to a fixed-charge metal unnecessarily. Metals like sodium, potassium, and calcium never need a Roman numeral, since they only ever form one charge, as shown in the beginner example.

- Using Greek prefixes on ionic compounds. Prefixes like "di-" or "tri-" don't apply to ionic compounds, since the formula ratio is already fully determined by charge balance, not stated explicitly through prefixes.

- Forgetting to omit "mono-" on the first element of a molecular compound name. Carbon monoxide is correct for CO, but the first element (carbon) never takes a "mono-" prefix even when there's only one atom; the rule only allows omitting "mono-" specifically on the first-listed element.

- Breaking down polyatomic ions into their constituent elements and renaming them from scratch. As shown in the regional variant example, nitrate, sulfate, and similar ions have their own fixed names that must be used as-is, not reconstructed.

- Getting the action-first, anion-second order wrong. Chemical names always list the positively charged component first and the negatively charged component (ending in -ide, or the polyatomic ion name) second, matching standard formula-writing convention.

- Misapplying elision rules for Greek prefixes before vowels. "Tetra-" plus "oxide" becomes "tetroxide," and "mono-" plus "oxide" becomes "monoxide," dropping the final vowel of the prefix before another vowel, a small but commonly missed detail.

- Confusing similar-looking compounds that differ only in atom ratio. As shown in the edge case example, NO, N2O, NO2, and N2O4 are four entirely different, real compounds, not variations that share one name.

Key Terms Explained

Cation

A cation is a positively charged ion, typically a metal in an ionic compound, named first in a compound's chemical name.

Anion

An anion is a negatively charged ion, typically a nonmetal in an ionic compound, named second with an "-ide" ending, or using its own established name if it's a polyatomic ion.

Stock system

The Stock system is the naming convention using Roman numerals in parentheses to indicate a variable-charge metal's specific charge in a compound.

Polyatomic ion

A polyatomic ion is a charged group of two or more covalently bonded atoms that behaves as a single unit in ionic compounds, such as sulfate, nitrate, or hydroxide, each with its own established name.

Greek prefix

A Greek prefix (mono-, di-, tri-, and so on) is used in molecular compound names to specify the exact number of atoms of each element present.

Binary compound

A binary compound is a compound made of exactly two different elements, whether ionic or molecular.

Oxidation state

Oxidation state, also called oxidation number, describes an atom's effective charge within a compound, the value indicated by a Roman numeral for variable-charge metals.

How This Calculator Works Methodology

This calculator applies standard IUPAC inorganic nomenclature rules, distinguishing ionic compounds (named with the cation first, unchanged, followed by the anion with an "-ide" ending, plus a Roman numeral for variable-charge metals per the Stock system) from molecular compounds (named using Greek prefixes on both elements to specify exact atom ratios, with "mono-" omitted only on the first-listed element). Polyatomic ions are matched against a standard reference list of established names rather than being algorithmically constructed, since these names are conventional rather than rule-derived. This calculator covers binary ionic and molecular inorganic compounds; it does not extend to acid nomenclature or organic compound naming, both of which follow separate, more specialized rule sets. Results reflect current IUPAC 2005 recommendations for inorganic nomenclature.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Chemical Name Calculator

1. How do you name a chemical compound?

First determine whether it's ionic (metal plus nonmetal) or molecular (nonmetal plus nonmetal). For ionic compounds, name the metal first (with a Roman numeral if it has variable charge), then the nonmetal with an "-ide" ending. For molecular compounds, apply Greek prefixes to indicate exact atom counts for both elements.

2. How accurate is a chemical name calculator?

It's accurate given a correctly identified compound type and, for ionic compounds, correctly determined ion charges, since the naming rules themselves are precisely defined by IUPAC and the Stock system. Errors typically come from misidentifying whether a metal has fixed or variable charge, or miscounting atoms for prefix assignment.

3. What is the Stock system in chemical naming?

The Stock system, developed by German chemist Alfred Stock, uses Roman numerals in parentheses after a metal's name to indicate its charge in a specific compound, replacing an older system that used "-ous" and "-ic" suffixes and could only distinguish two charge states per element.

4. When do you use Greek prefixes in chemical naming?

Greek prefixes are used exclusively for molecular (covalent) compounds made of two nonmetals, never for ionic compounds, since ionic compound ratios are already determined by charge balance rather than needing to be stated explicitly, as shown by contrasting the beginner and edge case examples.

5. When does standard naming not apply directly?

It doesn't apply the same way to acids, which follow a separate naming pattern based on whether the acid is binary or contains a polyatomic ion, and it doesn't apply to organic compounds, which follow an entirely different, more complex nomenclature system built around carbon chain structure.

6. How can I tell if a metal needs a Roman numeral?

Group 1 and Group 2 metals (like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) always have a fixed charge and never need a Roman numeral. Most transition metals, along with a few other metals like tin and lead, can form more than one charge and require a Roman numeral to specify which charge applies in a given compound.

7. What is a typical example of why naming precision matters?

The professional worked example, FeCl2 versus FeCl3, is a standard textbook illustration: these are two different compounds with different properties, and the name "iron chloride" alone cannot distinguish between them, which is exactly the ambiguity the Roman numeral exists to resolve.

8. Should I consult a chemistry textbook or instructor for naming acids or organic compounds?

Yes. Acid nomenclature and organic compound nomenclature both follow distinct rule sets beyond the standard ionic and molecular naming covered here, and getting comfortable with those requires additional, structured instruction.
