Every fall, grain farmers face the same question before harvest even starts: will the bin hold this year's crop? Guessing wrong means paying for commercial storage at the last minute, or worse, leaving grain exposed to weather because there's nowhere else to put it. A grain bin calculator takes the guesswork out of that decision by turning bin dimensions and grain type into a real bushel count you can plan around.

This article walks through exactly how the calculator works, what numbers you need before you start, and how to read your results with confidence. Whether you're sizing a new bin purchase, checking how much corn a existing structure can hold, or comparing storage options across your operation, you'll find worked examples and practical guidance below that match real farm scenarios.

What Is a Grain Bin Calculator and Why Does It Matter?

A grain bin calculator estimates how many bushels of grain a storage bin can hold based on its diameter, wall height, and roof shape, then converts that volume into weight using the grain's test weight. The core method multiplies bin volume by a bushel-per-cubic-foot conversion factor specific to the crop. Getting this number wrong has real consequences: underestimate capacity and you overbuild or rent unnecessary off-farm storage; overestimate it and you risk grain piling against the roof, causing spoilage or structural stress the bin wasn't designed to handle.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these details before running the numbers so your estimate reflects your actual bin and crop.

Inside diameter of the bin in feet, measured wall to wall, not including the metal thickness.
Total sidewall height in feet, known as the eave height.
Roof type and pitch, since a peaked roof adds usable bushel capacity above the eave line.
The grain type you plan to store, such as corn, soybeans, wheat, or grain sorghum.
Standard test weight for that grain, measured in pounds per bushel.
Whether you'll fill to the eave line only or use the full peak capacity rating.
Any known obstructions inside the bin, like a center sump or aeration floor that reduces usable volume.

How to Use This Grain Bin Calculator — Step by Step

Follow these steps in order to get an accurate bushel and weight estimate.

Measure the inside diameter of your bin and enter it in feet.
Enter the sidewall (eave) height, measured from the foundation to the roof line.
Select the roof type, since peaked roofs typically add 10 to 20 percent more volume than a flat estimate.
Choose the grain type from the dropdown so the calculator applies the correct test weight.
Enter a custom test weight instead if your grain is unusually wet, dry, or off-spec.
Review the calculated cylinder volume and peak volume shown separately.
Check the final bushel and total weight figures, then compare them against your actual harvest estimate.

The Grain Bin Calculator Formula — Explained Simply

Bin capacity is really just geometry with a farming twist: you calculate the volume of a cylinder, add the volume of the cone-shaped peak on top, then convert cubic feet into bushels using a standard conversion factor. Each grain type has its own weight per bushel, so the same bin holds a different tonnage of wheat versus soybeans even though the bushel count is close.

Total Bushels = [(π × r² × h) + (⅓ × π × r² × h_peak)] ÷ 1.2444

r = bin radius in feet, equal to diameter divided by 2, typically 9 to 30 feet
h = sidewall (cylinder) height in feet, typically 12 to 80 feet
h_peak = height of the roof cone above the eave line in feet, typically 3 to 12 feet
1.2444 = cubic feet per bushel, a fixed constant based on the Winchester bushel definition
Total Weight (lbs) = Total Bushels × test weight per bushel, which is 56 lbs for corn and 60 lbs for soybeans

The 1.2444 cubic-feet-per-bushel constant comes from the legal Winchester bushel, the volumetric standard the USDA and grain trade have used for over a century. Multiplying volume by this constant converts a purely geometric measurement into the actual trade unit farmers buy and sell by, which is why this formula lines up with what your local elevator scale reports.

Grain Bin Calculator — Worked Examples

Beginner Scenario: A Small Farm's First On-Site Bin

A first-time bin owner has a 21-foot diameter bin with an 18-foot sidewall height and a standard peaked roof adding 5 feet of cone height. They're storing corn, which has a standard test weight of 56 pounds per bushel.

Radius = 21 ÷ 2 = 10.5 feet
Cylinder volume = π × 10.5² × 18 = 3.1416 × 110.25 × 18 = 6,235.4 cubic feet
Cone volume = ⅓ × π × 10.5² × 5 = ⅓ × 3.1416 × 110.25 × 5 = 577.4 cubic feet
Total volume = 6,235.4 + 577.4 = 6,812.8 cubic feet
Total bushels = 6,812.8 ÷ 1.2444 = 5,475 bushels
Total weight = 5,475 × 56 = 306,600 pounds, or about 153.3 tons

This bin holds roughly 5,475 bushels of corn, enough for a farm harvesting around 175 acres at 175 bushels per acre with room to spare. The owner can plan truck logistics around emptying this bin in two to three loads at typical semi capacity.

Professional Scenario: Multi-Bin Site Capacity Planning

A grain operation manager needs total capacity across three identical 36-foot diameter bins, each with a 32-foot sidewall and an 8-foot peak, storing soybeans at 60 pounds per bushel.

Radius = 36 ÷ 2 = 18 feet
Cylinder volume (one bin) = π × 18² × 32 = 3.1416 × 324 × 32 = 32,588.5 cubic feet
Cone volume (one bin) = ⅓ × π × 18² × 8 = ⅓ × 3.1416 × 324 × 8 = 2,714.0 cubic feet
Total volume (one bin) = 32,588.5 + 2,714.0 = 35,302.5 cubic feet
Bushels per bin = 35,302.5 ÷ 1.2444 = 28,368 bushels
Total site bushels = 28,368 × 3 = 85,104 bushels
Total site weight = 85,104 × 60 = 5,106,240 pounds, or about 2,553 tons

With 85,104 bushels of soybean capacity across the site, the manager can confidently commit to forward contracts covering roughly 1,700 acres at 50 bushels per acre before needing off-site storage arrangements.

Edge Case: A Flat-Bottom Bin With No Peak Fill

A grain co-op is evaluating an older 30-foot diameter flat-roof bin with a 24-foot sidewall, where safety rules prohibit filling into the roof peak at all, storing hard red winter wheat at 60 pounds per bushel.

Radius = 30 ÷ 2 = 15 feet
Cylinder volume = π × 15² × 24 = 3.1416 × 225 × 24 = 16,964.6 cubic feet
Peak volume = 0, since fill is restricted to the eave line only
Total usable volume = 16,964.6 cubic feet
Total bushels = 16,964.6 ÷ 1.2444 = 13,633 bushels
Total weight = 13,633 × 60 = 817,980 pounds, or about 409 tons

Because this bin can't use its peak volume, actual usable capacity drops by roughly 10 to 15 percent compared to a similarly sized bin filled to full peak height. The co-op should mark this bin's rated capacity lower than its nameplate figure in their inventory system to avoid overcommitting storage.

Regional Variant: Metric Measurements for a Canadian Prairie Bin

A Saskatchewan producer has bin specs in metric units: 6.4 meters diameter, 9.75 meters sidewall height, and a 1.5 meter roof cone, storing canola at a test weight of 50 pounds per bushel (canola's standard US bushel weight, commonly used for cross-border comparison).

Convert diameter to feet: 6.4 m × 3.2808 = 21.0 feet, so radius = 10.5 feet
Convert sidewall to feet: 9.75 m × 3.2808 = 32.0 feet
Convert peak height to feet: 1.5 m × 3.2808 = 4.9 feet
Cylinder volume = π × 10.5² × 32 = 3.1416 × 110.25 × 32 = 11,085.6 cubic feet
Cone volume = ⅓ × π × 10.5² × 4.9 = ⅓ × 3.1416 × 110.25 × 4.9 = 566.0 cubic feet
Total volume = 11,651.6 cubic feet
Total bushels = 11,651.6 ÷ 1.2444 = 9,364 bushels
Total weight = 9,364 × 50 = 468,200 pounds, or about 212.4 metric tonnes

Despite starting in metric units, converting to feet first keeps the calculation consistent with the standard bushel formula, giving this producer a capacity figure they can compare directly against US-built bin models from the same manufacturer.

Grain Bin Calculator Results — What the Numbers Mean

A low bushel result relative to your expected harvest usually means the bin is undersized for your acreage, and you'll need supplemental storage, whether that's a grain bag, an additional bin, or commercial elevator space. A high result gives you breathing room, letting you hold grain longer for better pricing instead of selling straight off the combine. Most farm bins in the 18 to 30 foot diameter range fall between 5,000 and 20,000 bushels, while larger commercial bins can exceed 100,000 bushels.

The most common misunderstanding is assuming nameplate capacity equals usable capacity. Manufacturers often rate bins at full peak fill, but many operators intentionally underfill to leave headspace for aeration equipment or to avoid pressure stress on the roof structure. If your calculated bushels come in noticeably higher than what you can actually load, check whether your fill practices match the peak-height assumption the calculator used.

If your result falls short of your harvest projection by more than 15 to 20 percent, start lining up backup storage now rather than waiting until the combine is running. If your result comfortably exceeds your harvest, consider whether holding grain for a later sale window makes sense given current basis and storage costs. Either way, run the calculation against your actual test weight, not just the crop average, since wet grain post-harvest weighs differently than the standard dry-basis figure.

How Your Inputs Change the Result

Diameter has the largest effect on capacity because it's squared in the volume formula. Going from a 24-foot to a 30-foot diameter bin, holding sidewall height constant at 24 feet, increases cylinder volume by 56 percent, not the 25 percent you'd expect from a linear jump. This is why even a modest diameter upgrade delivers a much bigger capacity gain than adding a few feet of height.

Sidewall height scales capacity directly, one-to-one. Adding 6 feet to a 24-foot sidewall on a 24-foot diameter bin increases bushel capacity by exactly 25 percent, matching the proportional height increase. This makes height the more predictable, linear lever for capacity planning compared to diameter changes.

Test weight changes total tonnage without changing bushel count at all. A bin holding 10,000 bushels stores 560,000 pounds of corn at 56 lbs per bushel, but the same bin holds 600,000 pounds of soybeans at 60 lbs per bushel. This matters most when you're comparing structural load ratings across different grains, not just volume.

Diameter (ft) | Sidewall (ft) | Bushels (corn) | 15 | 20 | 3,006 | 21 | 20 | 5,894 | 27 | 20 | 9,752 | 33 | 20 | 14,581 |

Roof peak height contributes less than most people expect on wide bins. On a 15-foot radius bin, an 8-foot peak adds about 4,500 cubic feet, but on a 30-foot radius bin, that same 8-foot peak adds roughly 18,000 cubic feet, since cone volume scales with radius squared just like the cylinder does.

Grain Bin Calculator — Common Mistakes to Avoid

Measuring outside diameter instead of inside diameter. Bin walls have real thickness, and using the outside measurement overstates capacity by a small but meaningful margin on larger bins.
Forgetting to subtract sump or floor equipment volume. Aeration floors, unload augers, and center sumps take up real cubic footage that a simple cylinder-plus-cone formula won't account for.
Using a generic test weight instead of your actual harvest weight. Corn test weight can range from 54 to 58 pounds per bushel depending on moisture and hybrid, which shifts total tonnage estimates noticeably.
Assuming full peak fill when local codes or insurance restrict it. Some jurisdictions or bin manufacturers cap safe fill height below the structural peak, especially on older bins.
Mixing metric and imperial units mid-calculation. Converting only the diameter to feet while leaving height in meters produces a volume error that's easy to miss until the bushel number looks obviously wrong.
Rounding radius before squaring it. Rounding a 10.5-foot radius down to 10 feet changes the squared term enough to shift bushel totals by several hundred on a mid-size bin.
Ignoring grain settling and moisture shrinkage over storage time. A bin filled at harvest moisture will settle as grain dries, meaning the initial fill volume doesn't represent long-term stored volume.
Applying one region's legal bushel definition to another region's grain trade. Some countries use different bushel-to-weight conversions for the same crop, which matters for cross-border capacity comparisons.

How This Calculator Works — Methodology

This calculator uses standard cylinder and cone volume geometry combined with the legal Winchester bushel definition of 1.2444 cubic feet, the same conversion factor used throughout US grain trade and by USDA grain grading standards. It assumes a uniform, level fill with no allowance for grain angle of repose irregularities or mechanical compaction. Center sumps, unload augers, and aeration floor thickness are excluded from the base calculation since these vary by manufacturer and installation.

Results are rounded to the nearest whole bushel and the nearest hundred pounds for weight, since fractional bushels aren't meaningful in practical grain handling. Test weights default to USDA standard values per crop but can be overridden for grain that's unusually wet, dry, or off-grade compared to the standard basis.

Frequently Asked Questions About Grain Bin Calculator

1. What does a grain bin calculator actually calculate?

It calculates the total bushel capacity and grain weight a bin can hold based on its diameter, sidewall height, and roof shape. The formula combines cylinder and cone volume, then converts cubic feet into bushels using the standard 1.2444 cubic-feet-per-bushel constant, giving you a trade-ready capacity figure.

2. How accurate is a grain bin capacity estimate?

It's typically accurate within a few percent of actual capacity when you measure inside diameter and height correctly. Accuracy drops if you skip subtracting internal equipment volume like sumps or aeration floors, or if you use outside dimensions instead of inside ones.

3. What is the formula behind bushel capacity in simple terms?

You find the cylinder volume of the straight walls, add the cone volume of the peaked roof, then divide total cubic feet by 1.2444 to get bushels. Multiplying bushels by the grain's test weight per bushel gives you total pounds.

4. Does bushel weight differ between corn and soybeans?

Yes, corn has a standard test weight of 56 pounds per bushel while soybeans weigh 60 pounds per bushel. This means a bin holding the same bushel count stores about 7 percent more total weight in soybeans than in corn.

5. When does this calculator not apply to my bin?

It doesn't apply well to irregularly shaped bins, bunker storage, or grain bags, since those don't follow simple cylinder-and-cone geometry. It also won't account for uneven grain piling caused by off-center filling equipment.

6. How can I get a more precise bushel estimate?

Measure inside diameter at multiple points to catch any wall irregularities, and subtract known internal equipment volume like sumps. Using your actual harvest test weight instead of the crop-standard default also tightens the weight estimate significantly.

7. What is a typical bushel capacity for a farm-size grain bin?

Most farm bins between 18 and 30 feet in diameter hold between 5,000 and 20,000 bushels, depending on sidewall height. Commercial elevator bins can exceed 100,000 bushels, using much taller sidewalls and larger diameters.

8. Should I consult a professional before sizing a new grain bin?

Yes, a grain systems dealer or agricultural engineer should confirm structural ratings, foundation requirements, and local code compliance before you finalize a bin purchase. This calculator gives you a capacity estimate for planning, not a structural or safety certification.
